Going to the Woodshow Today

I will be going to the woodworking show today. Does anyone want me to pick them up something:confused::confused::confused:

These shows have gone down hill in the past years and I don't expect anything new. I will get my usual supply of disposable gloves, acid brushes, Titebond glues and some more clamps. Hopefully may pick up some exotic woods. But my real focus will be to play with the Festool Kapex miter saw that I have my heart set on buying. My day out!!!!

I'd appreciate a review on the show...planning to go to it at Dulles in 2 weeks, would prefer to save the 150mi roundtrip if it has not improved (I was a little disappointed at the last one, as you noted, it has declined and I can only use so many knock off Dremel bits!)
 
I went to the one in St. Louis a couple of weeks back. It is much smaller than it was a few years ago. I did note that there were more of the local wood turning and wood working clubs that had space. I did more networking with these people than buying. I did get some good looking burl blanks from Cook Woods. They had the kid that hosts the TV show Rough Cut there. The CUSA booth was busy with first timers making pens.
 
I wonder if this is the same show that will be in Atlanta next weekend? I went to it last year, and it was pretty good. I spent most of my time in the CSUSA booth. :) I'm drooling over a Wolverine system. Would be a good chance to take a look at it in person if they have one set up. Let us know how the show is this year.
 
I was at the Woodworkers show in Milwaukee last weekend. The show is certainly going down hill. Nothing there really caught my eye. The only one there that had anything turning related was CSUSA. If you order anything from there they don't have with them they'll ship free.

They did have a Wolverine set up on display.

BTW Woodcraft has the Wolverine and a slow speed grinder on sale March 4&5

Unless you are going after something very specific that you know is there, Then I would not waste the trip. We went this year and it was really a waste of time, other than spending the day with Ernie. I will not be returning to these shows in the future. For the cost to get in and the drive, I will spend a little more for higher quality with my local stores.
 
I will be at the CSUSA booth and usually help some nobies trying to make a few pens. I will need a new skew so will pick that up. Anyone thinking about the wolverine setup it is well worth the money in my opinion. Shapen tools so quickly and accurately. Well I am off. I will report back later tonight. I usually stay about 4 hours.

Agreed overall on the show.... Nothing all that exciting. It was good to wander around... The demo of the CNC machine that woodcraft had setup was pretty cool... but overall, I don't think I'd go ever year. I went because I hadn't been, but it would be a tough call to go out of the way for.
 
Well I got back from the wood show after about 3-1/2 hours. I did not buy anything spectacular. Just my normal sandpaper, clamps, glue, and disposible gloves. Played with the Festool Kapex saw and I believe I will pull the trigger on this saw.

Usual suspects there and nothing new and exciting. Played at CSUSA booth for awhile as well as the NJ turners club booth. Saw Barry Gross and watched him demonstrate his pen turning abilitys. He had a pretty large booth. Not quite sure how well he was doing. It was rather croweded for a Friday. It has been very rainy here with alot of wind so a great day for seeing the show. Just not the feel of days gone by. There were no show deals to speak of. It is what it is and basically what I expected. Till next year.
 
Thanks for the trip report John.

I will be heading there this morning. As you and other's have said, the show has really gone down hill since I started going about 10-11 years ago. Other than an opportunity for some hand's on with some of the products, there is not much to see. Even the demos from the major vendors have not changed in 10 years. :yawn:

Fortunately for me, it is only a 1/2 hour away and I always take my father. He turned 90 in August and hasn't been feeling well lately, so I thought for sure he would miss this year. But, he insists he wants to go, so we are. :smile:

Of course, the show does have the opportunity to make a free pen. In my case that "free" pen has cost me $1000s over the past 3 years. :eek:
