Ok I am going to New Mexico for a week on business but should have plenty of free time. Is there any places NOT to stay I was looking at North along the freeway or just west of the Rio Grande. Any help would be appreciated.

Jerry,

I'm assuming you mean Albuquerque.

What's your budget, i.e. are you paying, or is corporate paying? As a generalization, avoid the SW quarter of town. North of I-40 along I-25, especially as you go farther north, is fine. There's a couple of Marriott hotels near I-25/Jefferson and I-25/Paseo Del Norte which are fine, but totally dead at night (that may be a feature, not a bug). For a bit less $, the La Quinta, Homewood Suites, & Hilton Garden Inn off I-25/San Antonio are fine. A less boring location would be I-40/Louisiana; you want to be North of Louisiana. There's a Marriott there. The feature is that you are walking distance of the "Uptown" outdoor mall, with lots of (pricey) restaurants etc. If your budget is weak, the Holiday Inn Express/Hotel Circle (I-40 & Eubank) is fine.

Unfortunately, the Albuquerque Woodcraft store closed its doors.

hdtran

Jerry,
Since New Mexico is the 5th largest US state, can you pin point where in the state you will be? I am guessing you mean Albuquerque. What are you trying to avoid?

go to santa fe and stay at the la fonda. expensive but worth every cent. Been there many times and it is remarkable for art and experience.

In your town company is paying per diem so I am looking for inexpensive but not a bad part of town. As long as I can get to Rudy's and El Pinto and Sandia I am happy but north is where I am looking.
I like quiet and peacefull

Jerry,
hdtran gave a good rundown on the hotels and area. Since you can travel from Sandia to Rudy's in about 15 minutes on I-25, I-40, and El Pinto is approx 10 min from Sandia Casino, Sandia Casino might be someplace to check out.

I've stayed at a MicroTel right off the freeway at the western border of Albuquerque and loved it. 4 trips now, I've stayed there. Dirt cheap each time I've stopped, and I always got a full suite.

Drive up to Taos and get a slice of pizza. We did a hot air balloon ride while there. It was expensive but it was a once in a lifetime thing for me. We did the one where we dropped down into a canyon and rode for a while.

Rudy's has 2 locs (unless they closed one); I-40/San Mateo & I-25/Montgomery. El Pinto is a bit of a haul. Sandia is off of I-40/Eubank or I-40/Wyoming (your choice).

Quiet & peaceful? The Homewood Suites, Hilton Garden Inn, or Hampton Inn on I-25/San Antonio are all about 20 minutes to Sandia. It's quiet at night (except for being close to the highway). Me? I'd prefer the Marriott Uptown. Walk to a variety of places for dinner (fusion, Italian, etc.). 10 minutes to Sandia. When you get back to your room, it's quiet in your room. If your hotel points are on Marriott, do the Courtyard by Marriott on Jefferson/Journal Center/I-25 for the "quiet north part of town."

I prefer Mr. Powdrell's for BBQ to Rudy's, but that's a matter of taste. For Mexican, I like El Norteno on Wyoming near I-40, and for New Mexican, I like Papa Felipe. Sadie's (new 2nd location off I-40 & Eubank) has gigantic portions.

Thanks for the great tips I will be there Saturday night and leave on thursday. Where is the best Green Chile stew at and maybe we could meet one night or something.

pm me if you want and I will send my number to you.
