Have to make a trip to the hardwood lumber store. Need some red oak, walnut, zebra wood and some sort of mahagony (this has gotten ridiculous in price so I need a substitute) Hope to get some soft maple too. Have to bring the checkbook because wood is not cheap:eek: Keeps going up every year and people just do not realize the prices. Have held my project prices in check but it maybe time for some increases. Have to see what other goodies he has lying around. Always has something special. Hope he does not disappoint

I wish they would make a cologne that smells like a lumber yard.:smile:

What part of NJ do you go to for your hardwood? I am in south Jersey, just moved here and I am looking for a supplier. Thanx

I'm having the same problems getting good quality, reasonably priced lumber. My "local" outlet for Northland Forest Products just closed due to a lack of business. Now I have to drive out to near Charlottesville VA to the outlet there. NFP has their main store up in the Northeast - don't know how close they are to you. Really like the variety, price, and ease of shopping. I think that the local Woodcraft even buys lumber from them for resale. Hence, the higher price. Good luck finding what you need!

Went to a new (for me) wood store in my area (SW MO) - great prices and an accountant wife got me out fairly cheap - scored some awesome black and white ebony

I will give you a price on mahagony when I ask them. It has gone through the roof. Not sure when the last time you bought any Herb

Jim, you have a very good one down by you. Williard Brothers on Basin rd. in Trenton I use to go there at least once a year.

My main hardwood dealer had a huge fire this year and is closing down. This was US Mahagony in Aberdeen. I do have another not that far from there here in central NJ. I used to go to one that was one town over but his prices skyrocketed and selection became sparse. Not sure they are even still in business. Have not been that way in awhile.

I have Jeffries in Seymour, just outside of Knoxville... I have to save up for a couple of months before I can go there... can't get out for less than $200 to $300. It's like jail, once you are in, you can't get out until you pay up... but you do get to take a few goodies with you.

I haunt the cutoff bin at Woodworkers Source. People buy exotic lumber and have them cut off that ugly 6" on the end with all the knots, etc. Those aren't flaws, they are features! At 50 cents each, it can be a bonanza.

I did not know they do that. Pens with character as they say:biggrin:

Well I returned from my little trip to the lumber yard. Came back with $500 worth of quality goods. I was a little disappointed in the amount of stock available. Talked to the owner and he said he lost 2 of his regular guys and can not get enough help to keep inventory and fill custom orders. He has the wood in stock but can not get it available. I usually go there in the winter time when things slow down for him a bit but was in need of oak mainly so needed to make the trip.

Prices are inching up on most woods and I mentioned I would ask about mahogany. Hondorous mahagany in my area is going for $12BF This was the reason I switched to using Sapele which is in the the same family and looks just like it. $8.50 BF. Some people use African Mahogany.

Now all I need to do is get my butt in the shop.:biggrin:

John, I once found some Sandalwood cologne that smelled a lot like Lignum Vitae - I found that very appealing.

I tell you when I got there the mill was working on some orders and I could smell the oak in the air. There was an order milled wrapped and ready for delivery. Man there was some of the nicest walnut boards I have seen in a long time. Everyone knot free and beautiful grain. The white oak was as clear as can be also. That had to be premium stuff. Love the smell of fresh milled lumber .
