I was looking for a challenge so decided to try turning
my first goblet. I had some inexpensive California Redwood
that I bought one time at Home Depot, so I decided to use
some of that. I did the turning and finishing over about a week.
For the cup part I used a Forstner bit to remove most of the wood, then
used a bowl gouge to round the bottom. The finish was 2 coats of clear shellac
followed by a coat of wax. It's just a decorative item, not meant to drink from.
The other items are two candle sticks I turned from some Ponderosa Pine. When
I mounted it between centers I used the pith as the mounting point, so it was off
center a little and the bark didn't turn away evenly around the outside.
I decided to keep some of the bark as a decorative feature in the first one.
For the second one I turned all the bark away and then added some decorative
features with a burning wire. The candles are votive size and I used a Forstner bit
to drill the holes for the candles. The finish was also 2 coats of clear shellac followed
by a coat of wax. The candle sticks are decorative items at this point, not sure I want
to burn a real candle in them, might go with an LED candle.
Best of all, my wife likes the goblet and the candle sticks, so it looks like
I can display them in her china cabinet.
