I think I just tore the lid off my current project. I'm working on hacking out a Slimline based cigar replica of sorts. I have the body looking AWESOME, but I don't know how to glue a label on. I tried thin CA and met instant failure. I have to wait until someone comes through with more labels, but in the meantime I need to figure out a way to glue the label on. I'm also gonna have a LOT of coats of CA to get it properly embedded.

Thinned white glue?
Modge Podge?
Spray adhesive?
There is a great stamp casting tutorial by Alfonso that would probably work.
Just throwing ideas out there........

I was under the understanding that CA glue was being used to put the cigar wrap on the blank.....guess I'll subscribe to this topic and wait for the answer too(as this is on my rountuit list).

Scott (tobacco shop is good for giving the wrap thingies) B

I think my issues were trying with thin CA and not knowing what in the name of Sweet Baby Jesus I'd do with a label covered in medium CA to get it right and keep it right before it set.

Wow, thin CA sets way to quick....I'd have to try with thick first, at least you'd be able to move it for a few seconds if you needed too.

Scott (maybe there's a better way) B

Yeah. I thought I'd be able to get it lined up as I was pressing the label on and it'd be easy enough to shore up any loose spots with glue. As it is I need to wait for they guy that asked me to try to come through with more labels. He had a specific brand that he wanted done that I suspect was the higher end of cheap cigars.

You need to seal the cigar band first then secure it. I've messed around with bands a little and at times the CA will wet the band and make it look like crap! I remember reading that you should seal it first then apply glue. Trial and error I guess

I've actually used decals before. I tried a regular band but came up with the same results as you. I saw an article before that showed how to do it by Barry Gross.

Tacky glue which is sold in craft stores works great since it does not slide around much when first put down. I've done a lot of business cards and postage stamp pens with this.

Similar to Elmers but better.

The cigar labels I've used haven't had the colors run with CA. Maybe I've been fortunate or smoke cigars with industrial labels? IDK

I place the label where I want it, hold it in place and put a few drops of medium CA on the label. Then using a paper towel just like applying the CA finish wrap the 1/2 CA label around with the paper towel. The paper towel removes the excess CA. I let this dry and then do the same process on the remaining portion. No issues so far. This will also work on stamps applied to the tubes.

Good luck

I think I have something I can do with this one. The colors on the one I scrubbed held up just fine, and this seems like the most straightforward solution. Hopefully in a few days I'll have something to show off.

The 2 options I use are below...

Use a waterslide decal almost all of the major brands have an image of their label that you can find online and use. Using a waterslide decal will allow you to seal the label under the finish you apply.

Use a real label. To do this to make it as real as possible take the label and only apply CA to the ends of the label and attach as it would have been to the cigar. Real labels are guled at the overlapping ends and are stretched snugly around the cigar. Sealing will be a little tricky but I reccomend spraying a finish over the pen and label in light passes until you build it up enough to seal the label. This will also add to the replica in that the raised portions of the label can still be felt like a real band

If I can't get the CA finish over it the way I'm thinking, that's the next stop. Good call on gluing the ends. I think I can work with that.
