I am making a gift for a friend, and of course there is very little time until it needs to be done. With that in mind, I picked up this carving set at woodcraft. There was a couple problems that I ran into tho.......
1). The tangs were way too short
2). There was weird design on the guard / collar.
So I extended the tang and ground off the design. Handles will be done on the lathe. Went with Madrone Burl on these.....

That is a really neat way to extend the tangs.

Why do you have your blanks in clamps like that? Are they glueups?

I have a little spacer on the ends, cuz I wasnt sure what I wanted to do yet. Hopefully that extended tang will give the epoxy a little more to grab onto. Thanks for lookin. Larry

Beginning work on the handle for the blade. Then cut some flat work pieces for the box they will go in. All Madrone Burl.

Here is the glue up as I was taking it down I snapped a pic. Then there is the knife and fork together for comparison. Only thing left to do is build the box.
