I had another go at the pencil turning I showed recently. This time I used a visor with magnifying lenses. That made a difference in my being able to see more detail while turning. For these, I stuck them on a card with some hot melt so no one would pick them up and use them during show & tell at our club meeting.
Tools used: 1/4" spindle gouge, 1/4" round skew.

That's awesome. Would love to see you turning those on a video if you're ever so inclined!!

Me....do a video? Now that would be something! First off, even if I did manage to record a bit of video, I would have no clue what to do next.
I'm pretty good at a number of things but this digital stuff is not my game. Wifey has to record and find shows on the DVR for me.
Thanks for the turning compliment!

Which turned better the 4H lead or the B lead.... 4H being the hardest. Used to irritate my drafting teacher with the ultra fine lines from a 4H

Hey Vic, I found that the regular #2 lead was the easiest to turn. The #4 seems to be a bit harder but cut fine. They were more brittle and subject to snapping off if I didn't have my finger behind the lead for support. With sharp tools, both cut fine.
I tried a red pencil but with less success. The red lead seemed to be more "waxy" .....harder to get crisp detail and would snap off quickly.
Note I used wooden pencils...not those plastic types.
