The sauerbraten will soak in marinade for 3 days then get slow roasted. The sauce is made from the marinade thickened with ginger snaps. This one has a lot of complex flavors and smells wonderful already! Between the cloves and the juniper berries it smells like Christmas.........I spent half the day running down Juniper berries!

MMMMMM

I'm with you Rick. Love a good Sauerbratten. I haven't made any in a couple years (the wife hates the smell, She made me cook it outside last time). I think it's time for another one though.

I know it's a matter of opinion, but if you don't like good German food it's because you haven't had GOOD German food!!! Living in Milwaukee and having both Polish and German heratige I'm cursed with good eats.

Paul: Thia is good, when we were in Michigan last Tracy and I stopped at some hole in the wall place......truly a wonderful meal! Chef got such a kick out of us he ended up having a chat and making extra food. I often take some of the edge off the sour in Traditional German recipes.

Benson: Tracy and I think the sauerbraten smells wonderful! Bit intense but complex and slightly sweet.

GAturner: Cooking food like this is a family tradition on both Tracy and I's side of the family. I can't help but remember my Grand parents and all the wonderful family times around the holiday table while cooking.

Dave: Worked as a masonry tender for a Polish family biz. The boss's wife would put out a spread at lunch that was amazing! Good thing we worked like dogs, I would have been as wide as I am tall within a year!

I made chicken schnitzel and jagerworst in mushroom gravy with a spaetzel side the other day...one of my favourite food combos!

Good german food is wonderful! I have yet to have good Thai food, however...all of it depends on the restaurants that you can find. A good restaurant makes ethnic food good - a bad one can sour you on it forever.

Woops -- I thought I'd loggged into my wife's Martha Stewart Living forum ...

German food when done right can be fantastic. I used to travel to Germany several times a year, and always enjoyed the food, in addition to the people and the beautiful countryside.

Our family has frequented a restaurant in Denver area called Helga's, and it used to be really good, but the last time was pretty bad. A lot can depend on management's attention to details, and if they have a new or substitute cook.

I knew a long time ago, it seems, that I stumbled on the place to call home. All this talk and pics about food makes me hungry. Looks good too. Just had a bit of Cuban/Venezuelan breakfast. Yum. Now to the Haggis.......

We had a German restaurant in teh town beside the one I grew up in. She was a lovely, immense woman, who was full of joy. Compliments got you extra Schnitzel!

It came on a platter - not a plate...it would be lined with Scnhintzel, and layers of food piled on top of it. If you managed to finish it, she'd bring you more! She wasn't satisfied until you left food on your plate.

I loved that place - but it was tough to get into...she only opened when she felt like it. (as in, a few days a week, and no notice as to when she'd be open!)

Haven't had any German food in nearly 20 years... last time I remember was when the wife and I were on our honeymoon... we were in Little Rock and tried a different restaurant every night... we weren't really that impressed with the German restaurant we chose... but I do like my wife's version of sauerkraut and pork ribs... it's pretty mild after she gets done with it...

As for Thai food, last I really remember was again about 30 years back when I was on a group familiarization trip with KLM and they treated the group to a Thai restaurant in Amsterdam... really authentic Thai cooking... I like spicy foods and the Thai was good and spicy.

No sour to tonights fare. Tender lion jagerschnitzel (Bacon and mushroom red wine sauce). Tracy made candied squash to go with it.
