I saw a thread the other day about geocaching so I thought I might ask the question here. I dropped my handheld GPS off the top of the car the other day and cracked the display. It still works but its old and it would work perfect for the kids. My question, what would be a good unit for under 200 bucks. I like the idea of paperless but do I really need it, we do a lot of hiking and camping so I would like something that works good for all.

Thanks in advance.

No idea on the GPS unit but, I have quit geocaching as it is quickly becoming illegal! Calgary will levy $200 fine if you are caught placing or locating a cache! Ontario is following a similar pathway!

I use a Magellan Triton 500 as our primary gps for geocaching.

Never heard of it being illegal anywhere yet.. 1/2 the police around here do caching and one rcmp officer has about 500+ caches placed.

I preload ours with 1000 caches nearest to where we will be and its great that I can load nearest caches and read the origional posters notes, clues, etc..

On a similar note, friends of ours own www.landsharkz.ca who has a geocaching website and they carry a lot of geocoins, supplies and the geomate jr if you want a simple gps.

Illegal? I hope it does not come to that, It seems pretty harsh. I know Garmin has a couple around the corporate offices and thousands of people do it around the world. Most GPS company's sell units targeted for geocaching and usually money talks so I would think the big boys would want to keep selling units, they might have some influence.

When my Garmin GPS broke down I replaced it with a GPS enabled Blackberry. I've since replace that with a Droid X. Both work just as well as a dedicated GPS.

I can find no reference to this.

I would think if it were illegal, the Geocaching website would list that somewhere, but I can't find it. You would also think that if it were illegal, the authorities would have asked Geocaching.com to not list them anymore...But looking at a map of geocaches around Alberta, they are everywhere.

I'd like to know how they can stop someone from placing one on their own private property?

Fortunately, I haven't had to shop and compare in a long time... I am still rocking my 5 year old Garmin eTrex Legend for the little bit of Geocaching I do (I have seen used ones cheap on eBay). I have used my Moto Droid, but that can be a problem if you are not in cell phone range. I have even used the Garmin Nuvi from my car when I forgot my Legend. I have also resorted to just printing a page off of the Geocaching site and finding it without a GPS on a couple easy roadside caches.

Thats what I had an eTrex Legend does fine but like I said the screen is cracked so the lower left corner does not work. I'm looking at the Magellan eXplorist GC but I wan to make sure it works good for hiking and other things.
