Geeks part 2 ....... not exactly sure what the problem is now.

So this morning Lillian was on the computer again, XP machine, and a pop-up came up in the lower right saying a program was requesting access to the web and did she want to grant it. she clicked never, but didn't look at what program was requesting access.

Now we can't access the net from that computer at all. Neither Chrome nor IE.

I tried restarting the computer, I tried rebooting the router, I tried changing the program access and defaults.

I can't figure out what is wrong, what was changed, or what to do.

Any help?

I didn't read the link, but you need to get into your firewall settings and look around for the exempted programs. The browser should not have needed permission though after this much time.

My virus scanner often blocks off the access point and I have to turn it off instead (the virus scanner)

If I remember correctly, XP has restore points. Under help type restore and it will give instructions on doing a system restore before the incident. Anything installed after teh restore point will not work and have to be reinstalled but everything should work just like it was.

figured it out. It was McAfe acting up. So I uninstalled it and all is well again. I never used that virus scanner anyway, so no harm.

You do need an antivirus program. It does its thing in the background. Recommend you consider Avira. For Home version is free.
