Could you guys give opinions on the nova g3 and the one way talon? I am looking as a quality chuck for around $200-250 if I can get it without jaws then get some dovetail and spigiot jaws I will be happy. I like the fact that nova has the pen plus jaws.

I have both and prefer the G3. The G3's jaw are canted slightly requiring a dovetail spigot or tenon which holds much better than straight-sided jaws as on the Talon.

You can get a reconditioned G3 on the Teknatool website for a really good price which will allow you to get an extra set of jaws or two.

I have the g3 and the pen plus jaws and am very satisfied. I cannot speak to the talon. I got my g3 from woodcraft on sale and got three jaws and the small cole jaws for 199.99 plus tax a year ago. Then purchased the pen plus jaws this year. I should have bought the pen plus jaws a long time ago. Makes drilling so much easier.

I have two Talon chucks and like the both. My 1st came with threaded insert at no extra charge. Only cost me another $25 for new threaded inset after upgrading my lathe. My 2nd bought just a body and set of spigot jaws and had to pay extra for threaded insert.

I see where the G-3 would save you a few dollars if buy direct threaded 1" x 8 TPI, but cannot upgrade to different insert later. I do not know any place that sells just G-3 chuck bodies; perhaps someone can recommend a place. Nova jaw sets appear less expensive than other makers.

Packard Woodworks sells, One-way, Robert Sorby Patriot, & Vicmarc chuck bodies where you can select jaws you like.

I do not like swapping jaws only reason have two chucks. could save yourself some money buying extra jaw sets with whatever chuck you decide to get.

Are those the standard 50 mm jaws? If so I will probably go with this. http://www.novatoolsusa.com/product.sc?productId=45

Keep in mind you have $20 for an insert as well.

I'm looking for more and more chucks as I hate changing jaws. :-)

If I were you and only planning to buy one chuck for awhile, I'd be getting the g3 preset with the 1x8 and with reversing ability. It really is the chuck you probably will get the most bang for your buck from.

I'm going to keep the bigger jaws on a supernova 2 for bigger (for me) bowls and try to have a couple g3s for other jaws and would like to get a midi to leave my cole jaws on.

I think the ultimate chuck would be the easy chuck. But I don't have $400 I don't normally use reverse unless I am at slower speeds while sanding so that isn't a big thing to me.

I am still undecided if I should sell my barracuda 2. It works drilling, using flat jaws and small stuff but it open up while turning, which is a little nerve racking.

I have the Barracuda 2 and have not had a problem. For any chuck, you need to tighten the jaws a few times as you turn, especially at the start, because the wood fibers will crush making it seem that the jaws are working loose. This happens to my Barracuda and my Nova 2 chucks. Also, make sure to use all the tightening holes, not just one. Run the lathe and turn for a minute or two then stop and retighten. Repeat until you cannot tighten it anymore.

I did buy the #2 dovetail jaws for my barracuda. That may help also. The stock barracuda jaws are not dove tailed.

I ordered the super nova 2 this morning and will be keeping my barracuda 2 . I usually tighten the jaws in all holes let it spin for a few minutes and tighen again. But in less than 5 minutes it starts to open up when turning bowls. This is the second PSI chuck with the same problem so I am hoping that the Nova will work better.

That should be a great chuck. I have the Nova Midi and the Talon. I only use the Talon for trinkets and rough shaping. The MIDI is much more precise. I am always wary of adapters on the lathe because it is one more thing that can throw you out of alignment. I worked for a solid week trying to get the wobble out of the Talon. I never got it under 14 thou. I tried building up tape on the jaws to even it out, but in the long run it just never worked well. A year later, I gave up and bought another chuck. I chose the MIDI because it didn't have an insert. The MIDI just screwed onto the spindle and ran within a thou. I ran right out and bought the full set of accessories for it and haven't looked back.

I have the MIDI jaw sets and they handle everything from pens to duck calls to turkey call pots to lace bobbins. For less than half the price, the Nova chuck was far superior to the Oneway. Hopefully your SuperNova will be just as impressive.

I have the G3 and it has been great. I have several jaws and feel the same way as Dan. I am thinking about a second one too. I also have the 1221 but I bought the G3 with the larger thread and use an adapter. This way if I do get a second lathe that has the larger thread I will be able to just take the insert out.

I was informed that the Hurricane is another option....I know, shhhhh.

Having the new, bigger lathe, I am trying to find a 'bargain' right now for holding bigger chunks of timber! I'll be watching this one...just to see what you choose.
