Just thought that I would tell you a little about the Australian Grass Tree.

It used to be called "Blackboy" but that is not Politically correct in these modern times.

Zanthorrhoea belongs to the Lilly Family are there are eleven species that grow in Western Australia.

It is an extremely slow grower and a 10ft tall trunk would be 1000 years old, give or take a day or two.

The core of the trunk is obviously where the roots grow and that core is bell shaped and the roots grow out like those of a lilly or onion. The outer shell of the trunk comprises of finger like segments and these segments are the base of the "Grass leaves", and they are very sticky which holds them together. As the "Leaves" die they are shed like a Palm tree leaving the trunk exposed.

The plant usually grows one ring of segments each year and these are approximately 1/8 inch thick and are produced in such a manner that they fit between each other. That is why it takes so long to gain much height.
When the new "leaves" first appear they are soft, white and edible, tasting a bit like coconut.

The flower grows out of the top of the plant and is usually one straight spike, up to more than 3ft. tall and is covered with creamy white flowers for most of its height. One curious thing about Grass trees is the fact that if a deformed (not straight) flower is produced, then they will almost always be deformed in that particular plant.

The downside of this wonderous plant is that the dust from the wooden part is very dangerous, and full breathing protection is a must.

I should have gathered some photographs before starting this thread, but that is me, like a bull in a china shop. I promise some pics very soon.:frown:

I hope you enjoy this little bit of info.

Thanks for looking.
Bob.

Here are some photos.

No. 1. Sorry about the Black & White, but is an old photo.

No. 2. Root and part of the inner trunk.

No. 3. Outer trunk segments, complete with sand stuck on.

Enjoy.

Geez I got half dozen of them sitting in my chook yard.

Hey you...! you don't come up here and tease the living life out of us, without at least showing us some pics, capich...???:biggrin:

And Bob, I seen thousands of those things when I lived in the NT and worked in the area of the Kimberly, also. They are really ugly when the fire gets through every years (burn off's) as they call it, I seen many of those no far from water, never new how they looked inside, damn...!

Cheers
George

So I'm reading this thread using the bad Australian accent that I borrowed from one of the voices in my head when I hit the bolded bit. I think I broke my brain.

No Mate, Brain not broken.

"Get it",
"Don't you understand what I'm saying"
"Get the picture"

Bob.

I understand the word. I just typically use a bad Joe Pesci accent that I borrow from a different voice in my head when reading it. When using my bad Crocodile Dundee accent, it made my brain 'clunk'.

Hi Charles: Welcome to IAP!

In this thread, the Grass Tree Blank that Bob Wemm referred to was a pretty special project! You may contact him for any particulars, or other Aussie Mates, but I suspect there will be a slim chance of getting pen blanks from this grass/tree species.

Happily, you blokes have an abundance of timber to keep you warm at night!!!

I'll post a link from the progress Bob had with this blank in a few minutes.

Again, welcome!

Best Regards, Mark

Hello. I am new to this forum, but am keen to obtain some grass tree blanks. Anyone have any for sale?

Cheers,
Charles

Hi Charles,
Send me a PM,(private message). I have a small box full of them. You'll need to have a decent respirator or extremely good dust mask/s, a full face mask as turnings are dust, not shavings, and will go everywhere.
