There is nothing more frustrating than taking that final pass before sanding and BOOM a chunk goes flying off and there is this glitter of brass spinning by. This tends to make me question this being a viable way to relax.

Oh well next step, see if I can take some CA and sawdust and still make an usable cap.

After getting away from all power equipment, the solution is ice cubes, favorite adult liquid, mix if desired, sip, and relax.

Life is short. After a couple beverages, the stress is gone.

Fill it with turquoise! Its a feature, not a flaw .

Always look for the re-design opportunity...

Look through all the sawdust under lathe, look under work bench, finally find piece that popped off, glue in place, plenty of sawdust / coffee grounds / turquoise to fill seam, finish!

I usually just cuss a bit and get a new blank. I have half a dozen where I got one barrel of a two barreled pen turned and then blew the other barrel - actually most of them look alright two toned.

Sharon, I'll have to get me some turquoise to try some time.

Coysquibbly, yeah I'm admitting it happened that is what I did wrong. ;)

Jim, I believe you are correct a nice cold one is the best way to relax.

I have not done it with a blank that cost over $25, but I have had it happen on several that cost over $15.

I had a Christmas order for a spalted maple pen. I had two in a row blow out while turning. I ended up making the pen out of spalted hackberry and the customer loved it.

Now don't you feel better.

Shortly after getting started I destroyed a box full of Brooks803 blanks before figuring out how to manage them. I almost quit turning pens altogether.

Definitely frustrating!
I have found that it happens a lot less if I'm really thorough with applying CA to the tube and making sure the entire 360 of the blank gets well covered inside. See if the piece that came off and the exposed brass show any signs of glue residual. If they are clean then the place without a good CA bond becomes the weakest link.

have you done it with a blank that cost above $25 yet?

Put it to the side and wait for design oppotunity to come by.

I did something even stupider. I ordered custom cast blanks to the tune of about 20 dollars apiece. Drilled one and started carefully turning it. Suddenly it blew up and I discovered I had forgotten to glue a tube into it.
The tube was still sitting there where I put it to let the paint dry.

Don't worry Sharon I've done the same thing, not with pen turning but others. It's funny when you've finished putting something together and it doesn't work or look right and you look at the extra parts pile and you see something that's not extra but forgotten. Thanks for sharring I thought I was the only one that did that.

It used to happen fairly regularly to me until I stopped using ca glue and went back to plain old 2 part epoxy glue. Apply to blank, apply to tube, and there are no blank spots to blow up.

I haven't left the tube out yet, but I have assembled a pen to then look down and see the clip sitting on the table and think I thought something looked wrong with this pen.

I use 2 part epoxy, I will have to try applying to inside of blank and the tube.
