From firewood to Bic stick

I thought it would be interesting to keep a record of where I started and ended for one of my pens. I started out with a piece of firewood that I cut in two, then drilled and made rough cylinders, and turned down into the two Bic stick pens I show here. I always enjoy the less conventional of not starting with a pre-cut blank, but with whatever wood I can lay my hands on. I bought this as firewood, and it was sold as Mopanie wood.

I am glad to see I am not the only one . I have had instances where I almost ran out of firewood because I wanted to use all the wood for woodworking (although not often).

Honestly, woodturning has me looking at firewood all the time. I have a gas fireplace. Some of the nicest surprises are from firewood!
