??? for G0462 lathe owners

LOML bought me the G0462 this week :biggrin::biggrin: so I could turn some larger things that my Jet mini just can't do. Today was 'test drive' day and I roughed 3 bowls from green wood. I noticed that the silver fins around the motor get very warm. Warm enogh that I can't rest my hand on it.

So my question. Is it normal for it to get that warm (hot) or do I need to call Grizzly?

Jim I went to the web site and checked out the lathe---yup they call the motor a two horse. I am guessing you are just pushing the limits. Don't get me wrong I like those folks but I think they get a bit carried away rating some things.
I would give them a call.
 
Gary - The motor didn't seem to be straining at all. It kept a very even rpm as I watched it some of the time to see how it handled the cuts. I did 2 small bowls out of elm (log) then a medium bowl from a log of pine that started at about 8" diameter and about 6 inches deep. I turned it between 600 and about 1100 rpm. All the wood did seem pretty hard and I know it would have been enough to stop my Jet 1014 in its tracks but I thought the 2HP Griz should be able to handle it.
 
I have a project I'll be running tomorrow that will keep the lathe on for a good couple hours. I'll confirm how much heat it runs. Mine is in a cold basement, so if yours is in a heated space, it will warm up much quicker than mine right now I bet.
 
I have a G0462 and the motor case has always run hot. I'll echo what others have said, the motor case is designed to be a heat sync, and by default will run hot.

Last summer I spent two solid 8 hour days turning 18" baseball bats, the motor got hot, but never stalled or failed.
 
Thanks for the responses. I did call Grizzly. They confirmed what all of you said. It's serves as a heat sync and will get hot. They did ask me a few questions. Any nosies? Any smells? Does the RPMs stay steady? They also suggested I could take the back cover off the end of the motor and turn on the lathe to ensure the fan was spinning. I had already done that and everything was fine. They also commented that it's pulling a lot of amps on a 110 ciruit and will run warm/hot. He said everything sounded OK and that he would make a note on my purchase record about my call in case I had any problems down the road.

I will say the folks are Grizzly were very good to talk to.
