Food safe...

Hoping to make a serving board for the LOML, have never before used any kind of food safe oil or food safe wax.

Suggestions/help on what to use?

Saw a few things listed at CSUSA and also Woodcraft, not familiar with any of them.

If you need this related to pen turning, then I can tell you I use to date a girl in school who chewed on her pencil all the time, I am sure she would be happy knowing I could make her a pencil with a food safe finish

Pure Tung oil, salad bowl finish or butcher's block oil. Beeswax may also work.

There was something on DIY a few weeks/months ago about food safe finishes. The wood turner who they interviewed suggested walnut oil. See here:

I could be wrong, but I believe any finish is safe "AFTER" it cures. Anyways, I have had good luck with mineral oil.

Yep, Russ was not at a losss for words on the subject, great reading.
Just another reason to use extra virgin olive oil.

My candy bowls on my desk in the office are finished in Waterlox, I ussually keep MM's in there (peanut), nobody has gotten ill in the past 5 years from eating them and the sure don't ask about food safe when they are grabbing for them [8D]

Yes, Russ has excellent info on the subject of turning and associated finishes. However, I prefer to err on the side of caution. As a result, I've been using only Walnut or Mineral oil since they don't go rancid over time. Saturday I came across an older turner who uses a product out of Michigan called Bee's Oil. It's a mixture of Mineral oil and Bee's wax. He get's a fantastic finish with it and it is quite safe.

If it won't be used as a cutting board, I recommend the Salad Bowl Finish. Easy to use and really lasts.
