Hi all,
I've read just about all the posts about using food colouring to dye wood.
maybe the stuff in UK is different than what you guys get but I'm trying to dye a tubed rounded blank ( I think it's maple ) with blue colouring.
After several coats and allowing to dry, it just looks like a crummy greyish blue. Do I just need to keep applying it or will the colour come back when I CA it?

Thanks in advance

What brand are you using? I generally just used one coat of dye. Adding more makes it look worse and worse IMO.

Greyish blue ? I would guess that it's the food colouring you are using . The stuff I use makes a vibrant blue , in fact a little to dark if I put on 2 coats . I use Mc Cormicks Food coloring which is a major brand here in the states .

This stuff is our local supermarket brand ASDA/Walmart.
I hope I haven't wasted this blank:frown:
Just noticed that it looks the same colour as this :frown: smilie

I use Aniline dye, it is made for wood. The super market dye made for food and material just does not give you a lasting brilliant color on wood. The costs are about same. Carl

Thanks for all the quick replies and esp for the PM:wink:

My wife told me that we can get the McCormicks stuff here too, so I'll get some and try again.

I'm scared to put a finish on this incase it stays that colour.

Oh well, live and learn:biggrin:

Thanks again

I used the McCormicks on my projects, they come in both regular and neon colors. Another option though is to use Prismacolor double-end markers. They are an alcohol based dye marker with one end being a large applicator tip. They are available in a myriad of colors at art shops as well as hobby stores in the art section. I have used them with good success on pens, but as with food coloring, you need a hard outer finish such as CA or Enduro.

McCormics works great

I was told not to use any thing with sugar in it.

Just got back from another supermarket where my wife thought she saw the McCormick brand....they didn't have it but then the penny dropped:biggrin:

This shop had Dr Oetker brand, but in two styles next to each other.
One said Natural Food Colour and the other was Artificial.
The artificial one said to use VERY little and to wear gloves:biggrin:

I washed the old natural stuff off and re-applied the new one.

What an amazing differance!!!! :biggrin:With just one coat of this stuff, it's as vibrant as any I've seen here. I'm now a happy little rat!!!

Time to go play:tongue:

Thanks again

I use the McCormicks too. Straight out of the bottle. I use two coats only because I found that the maple soaked it all up on the end grain and I don't use a very heavy first coat anyway. Good luck.

I'll have to look for the Analine. I haven't come across anything as cheap as the food coloring, but you do get what you pay for...

Someday, I'll probably want quality over quantity.
