Well I don't know any more than I did. I'll have to get some fresher osage that is in it's yellow stage and try again. Here is a pic of the slimline that has spent the last week outside on a deck rail with no change of color. I applied 2 soaking coats of ArmorAll first followed by 2 coats of CA/BLO.

Johnny the worn look is a combination of trying for a satin finish and rookie photo techniques[:D] I followed another Jim's photo style using a semi-translucent storage box with lights on the outside and black foam board. A million times better than my pervious pictures. In the last month of lurking around here I've gleened quite a bit of information[:D]
Frank, unfortunately I did not have a control piece to compare to. And this blank was cut, drilled and glued up sometime last fall. In the last couple of years reading up on segmented bowls I ran across a thread about using ArmorAll. It was reportably a good product and did not cause problems with the finish as most believe silicone based stuff will. I just picked this time to try it.

I cut quite a few osage orange ( OO ) blanks recently. While not in total darkness, they have been in the shop and not in direct sunlight. I'll put one outside today, the other in a file cabinet drawer. Will leave them that way until I hear that you want to end or check the progress of the test. Lot of variables, about of sunlight, the wood itself, etc. So this isn't scienttific but should be an interesting guide for this much cussed and discussed subject. Actually, I have an idea for a uv inhibiting finish that, maybe one day I'll try. The bottom blank in the picture is going outdoors. The color rendition on my monitor (before uploading) looks pretty true.

Today I compared the outside blank with one from my shop, not the control blank in a dark drawer. The outside blank, after only two days, has taken on a light, but definate 'tan'. The bright yellow color is gone. We have not had rain, the blank is otherwise weathering and is exposed to direct sunlight about six hours a day.

I thought I remembered that stuff changing fairly quickly. Thanks for the update. Do you happen to have some ArmorAll around?
