LOML wakes me up at 5:00 this morning and says the AC is making a bad banging noise. So I go check it out and it sounds like the squirrel cage is trying to unass itself from the unit. Not good! Could come loose and damage the coils, so AC is off until I can get an AC guy to come fix it. So I call him at 7:00 AM and he says he's busy with an install this morning, and has people lined up all day. Says to call him Monday AM! Says me, "Dude! There is no way we can go all weekend with no AC! This is San Antonio in August! Are you insane?" He is a friend of my daughter, so he gets the call. Anyway, he says he may be able to work me in around noon. I'm praying he does! And the house and unit are only 4 years old!!!!

AC guy came about an hour ago. The inner wheel plate (for lack of a better description) that mounts on the motor shaft and carries the squirrel cage fan came loose from the fan blades. It's only 4 years old. Nice quality control there, Carrier! He's off to find a replacement cage if he can. It's only about 84 downstaris, so it isn't unbearable yet. About 10 degrees hotter upstairs though. Thankfully there is only a guest suite and my gameroom up there.

My symptoms were headache, stiff neck (all the way down my spine!), nausea (with expulsion from two places ;-)) and fever. I don't remember EVER feeling so bad!

But enough of that! AC back running at 5:30 for the mere cost of $240. So much for me getting one of those new fangled turning tools with the replaceble carbide tips! I guess I'll have to stick with my traditional stuff for now. But we and my pooches are cool!

I feel for ya Billy...we had two on two different houses die in the middle of a Fresno Ca summer...we've had a home warranty for the last several years that also includes a time frame...humidity ain't fun...112 just plain sucks!

I feel your pain, Billy! I lost the compressor on one of the outdoor units today. South Central Georgia has about the same temperatures as San Antonio, with a little more humidity.

As I write this at almost midnight, the kitchen and great room are STILL at 87 degrees. I have a window unit that I use in a shed that I rigged for the bedroom.

This will require a new outdoor unit, a new coil and a refrigerant change out, as this is an R22 unit. I can't even start the process until Tuesday, when I find out how much Carrier will warranty. Even if Carrier pays for all parts, the labor alone will be EXPENSIVE!

I still have the ability to buy R22 and R12. I called the supply house today and a 30 lb jug of R22 is $300. To make a JUST compressor change like this requires a complete freon evac and recharge. Time to change out to 410 and get a new warranty, I guess.

Whatever we decide, this is going to leave a BIG financial dent at the worst possible time. I DO LITERALLY FEEL YOUR PAIN!

I was working under my truck about 3 weeks ago on my oil pan. Nothing I could do but get bit all over by mosquitoes. I probably had easily 15-20 bites on my arms and legs total. In about less than a week I broke out in a bad rash under both my arm pits, back right side of my torso, my right arm above the elbow and same on the left side. Itching so bad, burned. Within about a week left arm cleared up took two weeks for the right side to clear up. Also had some swelling under my arm pits. What helped me was using this liquid form of roll on of Cortizone 10. Based on the Mosquito bites and rash week later I can only assume it was related. I did experience some stiffness in my back and neck but I figured that was from the awkward position under the truck.

Sounds like it, Larry. The rash is one of the symptoms. Not one I had, but one of the common ones. Oh, and I only had one mosquito bite!!!

Kidding aside, I feel for y'all. I haven't had west nile, but I'm surprised I haven't with all the skeeters we had. Only lately got rid of most of 'em.

Saying I'd rather have west nile than put up with no AC in south Texas in August was just a play on Texans' "how hot is it" jokes. Didn't mean to offend anyone who has suffered from the disease. I realize west nile can be serious, and I apologize if I ruffled any feathers. No harm intended.

Hey Texas guy. WE lived in Conroe with a one year old unit that went out during a heat wave. I got tired of changing shirts and just walked around wet. I can relate to your condition and am going to issue a AC prayer. I owe a bunch of prayers.

No offense taken on my part, Jon. I'm quite a bit thicker skinned than that. As for being surprised that you haven't been infected, you actually may have and don't know it. It only shows symptoms in 20% of the population.

Ours died about 5 or 6 weeks ago, and of course living between the Mississippi and Tennessee rivers, with temps running mid 90's and better it was a miserable week until it got fixed.
Heck Billy, maybe you should have just gone down to some of those lovely establishments that serve refreshments, on the River Walk ....
