I turned my first "real bowl" as a Christmas gift after having only turned pens. it was my attempt at a mortise an pestle.

The wood is oak from a slab a friend gave me 4-5 years ago. It sat in my basement shop the entire time so it was good and dry.

It was turned on a 4" faceplate with a sacrificial plate. The blank started as a 5x5 block that was rounded on the bandsaw.

A lot was learned as soon as my nerves settled down.

Thanks for looking ...PJ

Great looking job!
Are you sure about it being oak? From the pic, it does not seem to have an open grain. To me, it looks like a heart pine or maybe fir. Maybe I need to get to sleep. 12:30am here.

Excellent! Nice to be able to use your turning skills on something a bit different, isn't it? Looks like you did an admirable job for a first bowl. Form looks right on for that combo. Well done.

Thank you for the comments.
After taking a closer look at the bark - You are correct. It does appear to be pine.
I have quite a bit left. More wood for practice before I touch the expensive stuff.
