I have just started to finish my pens using a CA finish and they are looking great!. But I read a lot of post where others add other steps after the CA. like ren wax or plastic polish. What is the advantage or why the extra steps?

I use gel gloss polish as the final step to my CA finish. It's just an acrylic polish nothing fancy. It really gives the pen a shine. I also use it as a final step on acrylic pens too.

I use a plastic polish as my last step to give it a final smooth shinny finish. For me it does better than Micro Mesh. I believe those that use a wax at the end do it becuase they like that as the final look (maybe more shine) but also to protect the finish against finger prints. If you are selling your pens and people will be handling them you don't want them full of finger prints. Remember, wax is not really a finish and will wear off.

5-8 coats of Med CA, buffed out using MM to 8000 then Plastix polish (automotive). Makes it nice and shiny

I progessively sand to 12,000MM, then us a very fine liquid 3M automotive buffing compound and a coat of ren wax. It provides a nice high gloss finish that brings out the wood grain.
