I am working on a special order pen made from teak. I have never worked with this wood before. It seems very oily (based on how it sands). Any recommendations on what to finish it with?
I made one or two teak pens for a guy once and used ca after wiping down with acetone, When finishing an oily wood like that I usually wet sand with denatured alcohol to keep the paper from loading up, then let it dry for several hours, then a wipe down with acetone and directly onto a CA finish.
On those particular pens the gentleman wanted a matte finish so I sanded to 800 or 1200 grit and called it done.
You can also use teak oil and allow the barrel to dry and then re-cloth the barrel many times. There are some woods that CA just is not the best finish. And I will switch to teal oil , or tung oil, lacquer, and put 15 , 20 , 40 cloths of finishon the barrel.
To get a matt finish on a CA use 0000 steel wool for the final application.
