The problem I have with using the Internet in general for research is that you never know whether you're just getting some crackpot, or tried-and-true methods and results. That's why I come here, where I can get feedback from a variety of people and see how well the techniques I'm considering actually work. Plus, when you don't know what you're searching for, its harder to look.

Jim, you are right in that it's sometimes difficult to wade through the Internet Chaff. There is a lot of misinformation out there on finishing. A good place to start is with one of the recognized and generally accepted reference works. Here are three very good ones:

The New Wood Finishing Book by Michael Dresdner

Great Wood Finishes by Jeff Jewitt

The Time Life Series The Art of Woodworking - Wood Finishing

A couple of very good web sites on finishing are:

www.homesteadfinishing.com
www.michaeldresdner.com

Gary,
Thanks for taking the time to put this together. For a complete woodworking novice like me (who can barely differentiate red oak and pine when they are next to each other at Home Depot, let alone figure out finishing!), the links you give above will be very helpful. Plus, now I have some books I can add to my birthday wish-list!

I'll also add the original link Gary supplied in a previous thread: http://finishsupply.com/TheAtanomyOfFinish.html

and two others that I know of:

http://www.woodcentral.com/russ/russ3.shtml and, of course http://www.penturners.org/content/ca-blo.pdf

If anyone else knows of some good finishing books and/or web sites, would you care to contribute them? Maybe we can get this added to the FAQ section.

Here's another good thread (already in the FAQ section, but for completeness...):
http://www.penturners.org/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1241

This one is an excellent discussion, especially at the end, of different techniques, including the results of one member's tests, and comments on the results:

This isn't specifically for pen finishing but a good site on general wood finishing.http://www.woodfinishingsupplies.com/default.htm

Russ' page on WoodCentral is a great collection of his finishing wisdom. I also have his 1998 American Woodturner article on finishing that pre-dated a lot of the information being available on the web. If you can get some of the older AAW mags, do.
