Was wondering if there is any trick to finishing camphor burl??? I see alot of pics of it and it has a nice red color to it. However when I finish mine it seems to look brown. Help needed. Thanks.
Keith - Camphor burl does darken as it ages, like a lot of woods do, and generally the wetter it is the redder it will look. Does it appear red just before you finish it? Could be that the turning process is drying the wood and darkening it. I've always finished mine with CA/BLO. Look at Fangars photo album, if you havent already. He has some GREAT examples of Camphor burl with CA finish.
Camphor (Cinnamomum camphora) has distinctly different colorings based on where it is grown. It grows in many places around the world including the southern U.S., Australia, China and North Africa. I haven't found a finish that won't work on it.
I've only done one piece of camphor burl, a duck call. It was one of the easiest woods to sand and finish I have ever worked with. Without any finish, it had beautiful lustre and chatoyance. Probably doesn't matter what you use as long as it is durable. And, yes, most woods do darken with time and exposure to light.
