I'll start off my saying I will try and post a photo of the finish but since all my things have shipped for my PCS, I'm not sure if I have a cable to hook up to my camera. That said I will try and describe it.
The wood is a Russian Walnut Root (if I remember what the gentleman in Moscow said correctly). I put what was my smoothest and most glossy CA finish to date on it. There were a few spots I need to work on but I'm getting better. It has been a week or so now since I did it and the finish seems to be failing. I'm not sure if I would use the term lifting but there are spots that don't correspond with the grain where the CA is no a cloudy or white color.
When finishing I tried the drizzle CA with the lathe off and rotate by hand to distribute. After about 5 coats of this I sprayed with the accelerator and let sit for about 5 minutes. I started to wet sand and that seemed to not work very well and removed some of the CA. I took it back to the wood with some sand paper. Made sure to clean up the blank again and tried another method this time with the lather on. I managed to get a good coat after 10 minutes or so and after sanding through the MM grits twice I had the nice smooth glossy finish. Hooray me. I did notice a few spots I needed to work on next time after assembly.
Can anyone, without the picture for now, give any tips or tricks. I have a few PMs with CA finish tips that I've been trying so I can find how to do my version of a CA finish. I hope to get some shop time before we drive to Texas and I know I'll get some good shop time in San Angelo if the base shop is still open (if not I'm stuck with no pen making for 6 months
). I've read a few people say that you should watch someone do a good CA finish and then practice a few with them there and I would be willing to do that if time permitted in TX. Of course I could just follow what my wife does since she gets a perfect CA finish every time but I'm too stubborn.
