finish on koa

I'm at the finish stage for a koa statesman and was wondering if anyone knew if koa was one oif the oily woods that needed the denatured alcohol cath before applying any finshes?

I can't say that I know for sure.... But the way I see it, it can't hurt to use it.... worse you are going to do is remove oil that isn't there, I would think.

Not only will it clean off any oil, it will also help clean off any other "gunk" (sanding debris, bushing shavings, etc.) that might be there.

I am with them I wipe between sanding with DNA on pretty much all wood blanks. Gets rid of dust or small abbrasive that may have gotten caught.

Koa is not an oily wood, but a good wipe down or spray down with compressed air is always a good idea.

I'm with Mike on this one. I clean all blanks with DNA (the alcohol, not the stuff they identify you with!) between each grit of sandpaper.

I have 3 good sized slabs of koa and they don't seem oily, like the cocobolo, or bocote blanks I have handled. Funny you asked this question, as I was getting ready to post a very similar topic. I'll do that later. The Koa does burn very easily, when you cut it or sand it, so there may be something there, but then so does cherry. If I were asking the question and DC chimed in, I'd certainly listen to him. After y'all leave here, please stop on by my post. I have an interesting question.
