I've tried a few different ways. I've never had luck with spray laquer, I think I'm too impatient to let it cure. My fav right now is a few coats of thin CA then a hit with the beal buffing system, even though I still get melted white diamond stuck in spots then have to clean it out. Haven't found anything that's 100% every time yet.
 
I enduro all my wood stoppers and polish the acrylic ones on a Beall system. To me, unless it's a really nice burl, stoppers look better in plastic. JMO of course
 
I get the Liberon at a local hardware store. It is similar to Trewax or Simoniz paste wax. I put on 2-3 coats. I also use it on pens and other non-food wood items.
