the stainless steel ones from chef specialties. craftsuppliesusa, packardwoodwords, exoticblanks, and peppermillkits.com all sell them.

As the for the salt. The ceramic salt mill mechanism that craftsuppliesusa, and packard, and peppermillkits sell it. It is the twin to the peppermill kit. This is also made in the usa. My dad have made over 100 of these and never had a problem. I also use mine that I made every day.

Only the Chef Specialties are made in USA, to the best of my knowledge. They also were judged the "best" mechanism for restaurant use in about 2000 in a competition in France.

If you can find the Zisenhaus or Peugot grinder mechanisms the are much more durable than any of the others that I have tried. These mechanisms are made in Germany, and until recently you could order them directly from Williams Senoma catalog.

The Chef Specialites grinder sold by Exotic Blanks and the Deluxe Pepper Grinder sold by Craft Supply are both stainless steel models, made in the USA, and the parts are identical (so I think both come from the same manufacturer), seem to work ok and are not nearly as expensive as the German models (under $20 vs over $40). I've had both Chef Supplies and CSUSA Deluxe grinder out in the marketplace for sometime with no failures.

My personal preference is the crush grind mills... the grinders are made in Denmark and guaranteed for 25 years... I find them to be the most versatile for design and will work for both pepper corns and sea salt.

I know some one that contacted Peugot about their mills. They told him under no circumstances would they ever disclose the maker of their mechanism...Bah humbug!!
