I am pretty new here and to pen turning. I was just curious as to everyones favorite pen type and favorite material to turn? I have only turned 3 different kits to date(Slimline, Cigar and Sierra) and plan on changing that as time and money allow.

Thanks in advance forthe replies

As far as materials go. Black Ash Burl for wood, TruStone for alternate materials, and my home cast PR for "acrylics"

I love the slims/euros and cigars because of how modifiable they are. (Is that a word?)

El Grande, Navigator FPs, Jr whatevers, and Zens/Electras.

Material, I like the resin I make. I rarely do wood anymore.

I really like the Jr Statesman/Jr Gents and material wise if I had to choose it would be ebonite/buckeye burl/inlace acrylics.

Majestics are nice but too big for the average person. Juniors are a really nice size IMO!

Not a pic of anything I have turned. On the up side alot of valid arguments as to why I must now spend money on some different types. Still trying to find my favorites in both categories.

I like a number of the Juniors and not all of them will be found at either PSI or CSUSA. But keep in mind as well that there are vast ranges in what people like, from $20 slims to $500 Lotus....so you can have a big variety of kits that are right for you.

Hey Phil!!

Consider this: Every kit needs to sell thousands to stay "in the line" from the manufacturers. So, someone likes each kit we can buy.

So, if you are buying to sell to others, try the ones YOU like best--it is easiest to sell something you believe in.

When I did this, I chose the cigar pen. MANY people told me it was too heavy, or too fat. Although I continued to sell it, this also told me what my potential customers were looking for. So, I added to my line with pens that I thought would get better acceptance.

The cigar remained my best single seller in the midrange, but my "sales spiel" improved when there were other styles to fit the wants of different buyers.

Hope this helps.
