Father Sing

I had the honor to meet one of our my heros and a member here this evening, Dick Sing. He spoke at our turning club tonite. For a guy who has "been there and done that". He was extremely humble and very well spoken. He is having some balance issues, so he he did not turn in a demo, but sat and told us stories and how to procedures for an hour and half...it was awesome. I have always looked up to him and he did not disappoint in person.....he mentioned Ed for Exotic and John U, both. As a professional Photographer I have met other people while working that I have looked up to, and more often than not I walked away with the impression they were very impressed with themselves...but not Father Sing...( for those who do not know, he is not a preist, but Father of modern Penturning.) He was engaged with the group and asked a lot of our names...remembering them all and above all put on no pretenises. As I left he called my name in the parking lot. He told me he had come with his wife, but was going to come with John Underhill...whom I also look up to for his skill....but John was going on vacation. I missed out meeting my friend John in person, but maybe at the MPG....

I just thought I might share this with you all.

I know how you feel. I had the pleasure of some 1-on-1 time with Dick at the 2024 MPG. A truly great guy. While we were chatting, I remember thinking about turning my first pen in 1999, with his book open on the bench. It was hard to believe I was actually talking to him. What a treat!

I had the good fortune to get the chance to meet Dick and his wife, Cindy, at the first MPG I attended three years ago. They did a neat demo on chatter turning and how to decorate items that have been turned via that technique.

They're both very gracious people and very nice to talk with.

JohnU is a pretty darn good fella too!

Thanks for responding Jeff and bugradx2....I am definitely going to attend MPG this year...after I retired it just seemed like there was always something...and last year my wife was invited to a sanibel trip so I stayed home with the dogs. This year I am trying to bring a friend and fellow turner from Sacramento. I PMed with John for a number of months and really consider him a friend while I have never met him in person. I really feel like he is the next "father" to pen turning in the making. We are lucky to have him here and so active and approachable.

Does anyone know the date and Hotel of the MPG this coming year? I am fired up to go.

I don't know if the MPG date is set in stone yet, it's been the middle of April the last couple of years. John, Ed Brown or Mark Dreyer are all on IAP and will post once it's set. A Marriott in Hoffman Estates (northwest Chicago 'burb) has been the host location. The registration has gone live the last two years during November if I remember correctly and will have all the info then.

I really hope to make it there this coming year as well. I too was fortunate enough to join Mark, John, Ed, Dean, Dick and their significant others at their "after event wind-down session" at MPG 2024. These folks are truly something very special. I also hope to visit with you guys there as well. - Dave
