Beautiful wood for those. Many times I don't want to spend several hours in my shop and fast, fun projects like these provide some satisfaction while building skill, even if just a little bit at a time.

Nice work. Here is a method to make them without kits.
Take a 1/4" steel rod 5 inches long. Drill and tap one end for a 8-32 hex head machine screw, That is your mandrel,, cut a blank about 3" long, drill a 9/32 hole in one end 2.5 inches long. Drill the rest of the way with 9/64, Slide the blank on the mandrel and use a 8-32 hex head machine screw to hold the blank in place. Turn to shape.

Chain and parts are available at most good hardware stores. You can buy the chain by the foot and the connectors etc.. Put a ball on one end drop the chain through the big hole and attach the connector. Easy, at a cost of about 30 cents.

Do you plug the hole in the bottom after the chain goes in or leave it open?

I think I paid 50 cents each for the kits...they were clearance as the company was changing styles...these went together with a standard 7mm tube like a pen and the top and bottom are a sex bolt...

I found some wood plugs, the rounded top kind drilled the opening to fit, force fit them in place. The kind used to cover screws on furniture. But left most of them open.

I've been wanting to make a set for a fan/light combo. I can turn one to the shape of a light bulb, but have not been able to come up with a good way to make one look like a fan. I'm going to mess around with some ideas tomorrow.
