An active member of our Indianapolis IAP chapter, Randy Kimery, has been recognized as an artisan/craftsman and was interviewed for The Republican, a local newspaper in Columbus, Indiana, Randy's home town. The full page interview included color photos of Randy turning in his shop, close up pictures of some of his pens and a nice report by Brenda Showalter, reporter for the afore mentioned newspaper. Randy said in the article that he has been turning for 2 ½ years on a used lathe and is a self taught turner. Ms. Showalter refers to Randy's pens as "functional works of art" and was most complimentary of his finished items.
Randy retired from working in a lumber yard and at Sears when a kidney transplant indicated that he needed a slower pace. He has turned his hobby into a hobby/business and has sold pens made of 92 species of wood, anther, horn, acrylics, Corian, whiskey barrels, shell casings and corncob. Randy has been commissioned to create writing instruments from materials the customer supplied that had special meaning to them and their families like the limb of a special tree. He is expanding his horizons and making shaving razors, bracelets, bottle stoppers, and more. The article quoted some of Randy's happy customers saying what quality and care goes into his work and that they are all unique and that one can see the passion Randy turns into what he does. Randy said that making a pen can take as long as two hours and he typically sells them for from $10 to $60 and nearly all has been word of mouth but our guess is he will be a busy guy with this article in the paper's subscriber's hands.
From all of us, Congratulations Randy it makes us proud to have you in our chapter.
