Hello. I have a couple questions about finishing. So far I've done friction finishes and CA finishes.

1. Why is BLO used with CA? What does it actually do?

2. Are there any decent friction finishes out there that anyone here uses on pens you sell? I'd like to try selling, but I'm not looking to make a lot of money, so my CA finishing right now is just too time consuming with the application and waiting for several coats.

Oh, let me add that I really love the way wood looks with CA, but I've found myself turning more Tru Stone and Acrylic simply because it finishes faster due to the lack of any finish application.

Any help is appreciated.

I believe the BLO just makes the CA cure faster. You could also try using an accelerator to make your CA finishing speed up a bit...

It helps it cure and some (like me) believe it helps to get a smoother application of the ca. Some also apply the BLO first to help 'pop' the grain. Try it and see what happens.

Pen turning is a hobby that you should learn to take your time and enjoy it. If you rush it, your pens will not look like you want them to look and probably not sell as well.

1 Not all are. darkens wood and pops wood ,mild accellerator, keeps paper towel from grabbing blank, helps to smooth out CA
2 Mylands, but several (at least 3 coats )and get hot(friction) to melt into the wood. I don't wait between coats......... I can do CA almost as fast as a friction polish.

Hi, BLO deepens the color of wood, if that is what you want, then fine. I use Mineral Oil as a lubricant between coats. This helps me level and smooth out c/a. Plus it smells much better. Baby oils` ingredients....Mineral Oil, Fragrance. Carl
