It is a day that all sane men must stay home if they wish to remain sane. It is the day after Thanksgiving and all of the stores have some really good sale prices for just that day. When the doors open, it resembles the running of the bulls in Spain.

Day after Thanksgiving...most store put on big sales...It's pandomanium, but you can grab some good deals! And yes, you need this in the UK!

Stan said it better. My wife has the good sense to stay home, but when my relatives are in town the women folk all go out while the men stay home, drink beer and watch TV...more my idea of fun.

Starts at 4AM, Skippy!

You have no idea how insane people can be, when motivated by "herd mentality". Lady was trampled in Wal-Mart (last year, I think).

We'll see TV coverage of people crushed against the glass doors of stores, in anticipation of opening.

"Black" Friday refers to the belief that this was the day stores went "in the black" (made profit) for the first time in the year. But, if you believe the quarterly reports of publicly traded companies, this is NOT the case.

Black Friday is the day NOT to leave the house. Yesterday I stocked up on beer, meat and charcoal...other than to work I do not leave the house and after work on Wednesday my household is "locked down" and we resurface again next Monday...once the maddness is over.

Eugene.

Originally Black Friday was the first day businesses showed a profit. In recent years it has become more popular as the day after Thanksgiving which is traditionally the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. Hope everyone has there pens all polished up because the way it sounds people are going to be beating each other to get a chance to buy one. Actually I did get my first Christmas customer last week and I really have not done anything to get it.

LOL, I love some of the definitions so far:biggrin:
Sounds a lot like our Easter Weekend when everyone and his brother is out sitting in grid locked roads:mad:

Fortunately I only go shopping once a year....Christmas Eve, shops are virtually empty and there are only guys like me that have left it till the 13th hour.

I actually enjoy going out on black friday. It reminds me of my football playing days (American Football for the over the pond folks) I get to elbow people and push them around while leading my little running back of a wife to get to where she wants to go.

That and watching the stupidity of some people.

Saw a lady try to lift a 50" flatscreen over her head by herself. Unfortunately a guy saw her and jumped to help her or it would have been the best instance of survival of the fittest I ever saw. I was hoping she'd be crushed under it and be a lesson to all about how not to be a retard, but alas it wasn't meant to be! dang good samaritans!

And then there is, of course, Cyber Monday...the Monday after Black Friday, when many online stores post their sales. That is more my speed...add to cart, no pushing, shoving, and I can still drink my beer!

LOML and her sister do Black Friday. Me I sit home and use the Netbook to purchase on line and use the free shipping offers, all this while having a turkey sandwich, apple pie and some football, then take a nap during the 3 quarter and wake up with 3 minuets left trying to figure out who is winning. Now I may head over the Woodcraft and look at the Band saw and Belt/Disc Sander they have on sale. I go out shopping as little as possible during the Christmas Season, about the only one I go out and buy for is LOML.

I will be up about 5:30 6am as normall and watch the madness on the local news while reading the paper and having my coffee. It gets crazy here especially when they have so few of the hot Items.

Is this a good chance for your citizens to spend their hard-earned "State of California IOU"s???

Expounding on what Daniel said - "Black" is an accounting reference to making a profit as opposed to being in the "red" with a negative balance.

Beginning in the mid 1900's, the Christmas selling season officially began the day after Thanksgiving ( which is always on the fourth Thursday of November.) According to my parents, the "mad rush" for Christmas purchases began in the early '60s - But they didn't live in a large metro area like NY, Chicago or LA, so they didn't know when it began in those places.

So merchants began to reference that mad rush day as "Black Friday".
