So, Santa was pretty good to me and I have a gift card for Woodcraft. I'm looking at getting a EWT rougher and I might have enough "spare cash" to also get a finisher.

First question...Rougher: I think the difference between the full sized and medium is about 1" of reach. I assume the thickness of the tool is proportional. So, what are the pluses and minunes of the different sizes? I kind of feel the thicker tool is better for roughing, even though I understand that you can get pretty nice cuts from this "rougher".

Second...Finisher...I like how the finisher takes the round cutter. I think this is good for inside cuts of various design. Again, I think there is a 1" difference and the price is about $25 (the smaller one is on sale). Is the extra inch worth the $25? As a finishing cut, would I need the extra reach?

Lastly... are there any other tips or words of advice one the EWT tools?

Thanks!

I don't know which tools you are referring to so I can't help. Maybe others will know but maybe you want to post links to the tools you are asking about.

I have both in the midi size, CI2, and it is not just the reach that is different. The cutting head on the full size is larger than the midi size. If all you are doing is pens and small to mid sized turnings, the midis are more than adequate. Just my opinion.

go big!

I have the david j marks. Signature ci0. Rougher and I love the extra 4 inches on the handle. I. Also have the ci1 finisher.
just a couple of things to think about.. loosen the head and tighten it often, if you build up alot of sap with alot of heat. That little screw will lock in tight and strip out very easily.
secondly. If you get the square cutter and u use a wetstone they say you can't sharpen them but at 20.00 a replacement. You can sharpen them...

If you have any questions about the tool, craig the owner of the company will most likely be the person that calls you back on the phone or answers your email... he's a very down to eartg guy.... good luck with your decision and ill gladly answer what I can fo you. Jason

You might want to check out woodchuck tools. Made by a IAP member.
He has one called the unitool that takes both the square and round inserts. I have both the one for pens (pen pro) and the one from bowls (unitool) which is a longer model. Very happy with them and he is very reasonable priced on the replacement inserts, which you will need sooner or later. http://www.woodchuck-tools.com/Tools.htm

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I have to go with the EWT over the woodchuck unless he takes a woodcraft gift certificate.

I got the full size rougher. I think that has the most flexibility for my uses. They were out of the finishers of every size, so I will probably wait and compare the mid-sized (not the midi) to the full.

Also, I did look at the manufacturer's site...quite a bit. However, I don't suspect they are going to give me an objective assessment of the tool. I was looking for some actual hands on experience type of advice, which I got. Thanks!!

Ive been looking at these as well.

Which would be best for Bowls? The finisher or rougher?

Would I also be able to do pens with a full size one?

The primary tool I use on pens and everything else is the BowlPro from Ken, the WoodChuck man. Just can't knock it. Now I have heard from another source that it is a bad practice to drop this tool on your toe, especially if you are wearing flip-flops instead of steel toed work boots. It wasn't me that did that, just something I heard somewhere.
