Topped with whipped cream? :biggrin: That's one good reason for me to move back to Indy. :wink: They should be ready in a few more weeks. After the first frost.

Oh and, Persimmon Cookies are to die for too. :biggrin: Got any other recipes I don't know about? I'd like to know :wink:

Forgot about the bread Ernie. Although the bulk of what we pick goes for pulp for the pudding & cookies.

Just ate my first persimmon cookie the other day. Very good. I love eating them just as a persimmon.
Fresh off the tree is great too. Don't eat the skin & spit out the seeds :biggrin:

I have never eaten a persimmon. What do they taste like?

Yes, they have their own delicious flavor. Although if I had to compare them to anything, I would say DATES. But, that might not be right either. NO....scratch that. NOTHING tastes like a Persimmon.
 
There's a wild persimmon tree sitting in front of the old barn across the street from my house that is loaded with persimmons... hope to get over there after the first big frost and pick up some before the varmints get them all... there's actually two trees, one of which is dead, so would like to harvest the tree for turning and the other for eating.

Now that's convenient. Yes, the varmints like them as much as humans do. That harvest tree will produce some nice furniture. You will enjoy both trees. :wink:
 
Funny you should mention this, a girl at work just brought some in earlier this week. It was pretty good. The persimmons in Indiana are ready now. There was a cold snap here(at least southern Indiana) about two weeks ago. They have been dropping off the tree ever since.

I wouldn't eat them fresh off the tree, I would let them fall first. If you get them too early (off the tree) they can be the most sour thing you ever had...

Mike you should be really kind to her. :biggrin: I was afraid they would be early. Oh well, there's always the local orchard that sells the pulp. Yes, you gather the ones off the ground first, then recognize the ones on the tree that are about to fall.check them for firmness and, the condition of the stem.
 
When I was stationed at Crane,IN,we had persimmon trees on base and my wife made persimmon jelly. Really tasty

:biggrin: Sorry, the pudding is never around long enough to get a photo. My sister-in-law made the last batch and, my brother conveniently forgot to call me, until there was one piece left.:mad: The recipe is there and, they are in AZ. till March. I'll ask around the family and, see who else might have it.

NEVER, NEVER EAT A GREEN ONE!!! However, when ripe the flavor and consistency is unforgettable. Pies, jelly, pudding, cookies, breads are worth the wait for tje first heavy frost.
 
Persimmon cookies, bread and muffins since I was a kid. Working on pomegranates for jelly...winter canning season!

I wonder if you are talking about the same persimmons that grow wild here in central Texas? I have several hundred of them on my place, hence the name persimmon hill pens. They are black round fruit a bit smaller than a golf ball? I will eat a few in the summer but turn my teeth black tasty tho. The wood makes nice pens... I should cut up some blanks and offer them to the members I have never seen one posted on here
 
another persimmon great is persimmon bread. Kinda like banana nut except its persimmons, pecans or walnuts, your choice of a local syrup, here we use Steens Pure cane syrup, and bourbon..........AMAZING

Probably a relative species to the midwest persimmons. Ours are copper color and, no staining. Not a spectacular looking wood to turn although, there are exceptions. I'd say if you have some that look nice, cut up some blanks and, offer them. Members are always looking for interesting wood to turn.

Yes, the bread is delicious. Haven't tried any with bourbon yet. Might have to mention that to the bread maker :biggrin: Thanks!
