Epoxy finish?

The other day while gluing in some tubes with 5-minute epoxy I started wondering if it would be possible to do a finish with 5-minute epoxy (the kind you buy at just about any store that comes in two tubes connected by a plunger).

Has anyone attempted this before?
Does it work? If so does it produce a dull matted look or a nice glossy one?

Either way I will probably give it a go myself with some unremarkable maple to that I am not at all attached to, just looking for others opinions and couldn't find what I was looking for through a search.

Yup -- been there and done that ---

Many of the epoxy materials tend towards a yellow or amber tone and that can be an asset or liability.

The epoxy coating functions in a similar manner to a polyester resin cast over the wood or a worthless wood casting with clear alumalite.

Because the epoxy tends to go on pretty thick, and you do not want to cut through it, over turn the wood, and back fill with the epoxy, then turn and polish to final thickness.

Thanks for the reply I kind of had a feeling they would tend to yellow but I thought I might be able to use that to my advantage some how.

This is the product I use in building custom fishing rods. Its for finishing the thread wraps. Looks like glass and wont have any discoloring issues. Sets SLOWLY and needs to turn at low rpms for several hours. I'll try to experiment with it for blank finishing sometime...
