End of blank problem

I am excited. The ca finish is working GREAT! I have one small problem. Toward the end of the blank where the blank and the bushings meet once I am done with finishing and take off the mandrel I have chips in the ca. How do I prevent this?

Some people use a razor knife or exacto knife to very carefully cut the CA loose from the bushings. You can also get or make some bushings out of Delrin as the CA won't stick to delrin like it does the metal bushings

Remove the blanks from the mandrels and bushings BEFORE applying the CA! Using the dead center approach you can sand and apply the CA without any "end interference" from bushings

I found doing a thiner layer of CA lets it cut/snap cleaner. The thicker it its the more it chips apart.

Between centers using a dead center.. Problem eliminated for ever.

Yep, finishing between centers is absolutely the easiest way to avoid those kinds of problems. []

You use a dead center to hold the blank between centers without bushings. this is held with GENTLE preasure. Now you apply your CA to the blank. Once the CA is dry, lightly end mill the blank by hand to flatten the CA. Now put the bushings back on and sand as needed to polish.

I use a very sharp barrel trimmer turned very slowly and gently by hand.Seem to work for me.

I have tried delrin, other non stick plastics, waxes and wax paper, but I still had the same problem. I used oily woods and even snapping or cutting the blank from the bushing/delrin, I would still get that little chip about 50% of the time. Sometimes I figured that I may have got wax transferred to the blank, causing the CA to not stick in a spot.

Then I went the "no mandrel" route with the dead center this summer - and I have made nearly 2 dozen cocobolo or ebony (oily) wood pens without a single problem.
