Educate me on IPods and MP3 players

I have to admit to paying more attention to woodworking technology than personal entertainment technology (actually woodworking technology IS personal entertainment technology...just produces USEFUL items rather than busted ear drums, lol).



Anyhow, I need to buy an inexpensive Ipod or MP3 player to use for listening to sermons, lectures, and audio Bibles. I can convert any audio file to MP3 I believe with my software.


What is the difference between a regular "MP3 Player" and the Ipod by Apple? Do MP3 players require any sort of memory card or can you just dump a ton of data on them like you can the Ipod?

What is a good inexpensive brand to buy new---

or do you maybe have one that you would be willing to part with for a good price for a Po' seminary student?

You might consider <b>SanDisk</b> SDMX2-1024 <b>Sansa e140 </b>1 GB Digital Audio Player with SD Expansion Slot which runs about $80 through Amazon. The beauty of this player is that it expands practically forever as it takes SD memory cards at 2GB for about $25.
 
The iPod is the best. It can be spendy. The iPod Nano, either 1 or 2 gigs would be a good choice. My wife wants one. All my kids have iPods. Never have had a problem with them and the sound is fantastic. You can get a new 2 gig one on EBay for around $100. The 1 gig one go for around $60. The 1 gig one holds up to 14 hours of listening. You can use up some of that space by saving pictures on it. There are other ones like the MobiBLU B153 (2 GB) and iRiver cliX or Samsung YP-T9. I am a member of Consumer Reports online and they rate these I just mentioned higher than the iPod. The MobiBLU B153 (2 GB) got the Consumer Reports Best Buy rating of all these. I am not familiar with it, however it must be good and for a decent price. I see a MobiBLU B153 (2 GB) on eBay right now for a starting price of $100. No picture viewing on the MobiBLU B153 though.

I do like Lou's idea of using an expansion disk for saving and going back and listening to things again. I have some Fathers of Mercy CD's that I've listened to 5 times over in my vehicle.

I bought my wife the 4 gig version of this unit, it is nice. My bosses son has the same one. Works great. I'd advise, though, buy the unit with the most memory that you can afford. Will be cheaper in the long run.

Yes they are refurbs, but you get the same 1 yr warranty for a great price and they are truly like new (got a 2 gig nano and a 30 gig video there for two of my daughters). They are the same units you would get if you sent your ipod in for a warranty replacement. Some of the models come and go as they get stock in. Sometimes you can see a 4 gig mini for about a hundred bucks. Unless I planned on using video I think for most people 2 gigs should be plenty of memory and 4 gigs should be overkill, and the nano size (old or new nano version) is so nice. It is easy to pull stuff off if you need room, and reload later after you finish your book or podcast etc.

If you buy the one Lou mentions, you don't have to worry about buying the most memory. SD cards are getting larger and cheaper all the time and a 2GB card will hold a lot of audio. The SD cards can also be used in certain phones, handheld pc's and some digital cameras. They can also be used with pc's if you have a card slot or purchase a card reader.

I have the 4 gig Sandisk player and love it. I haven't filled up the memory yet, but the expandability with the SD card slot is a great feature. It will also play video clips, but the screen is mighty small [:0].
 
Make sure you can scroll to find what you want to listen to. The smaller ones you can not do that, they are flash drives. The bigger ones have hard drives like computers and there easier to search thru. About 3 years ago I got a small digital voice recorder/ MP3 player Olympus WS-300M. I was very suprised to hear the sound quality using a good mic and can record many hours of sound. A MP3 player and a $50 computer speakers system can sound realy good. Does many of you listen to audio books while working? Here is an address for old time radio shows. 100's of MP3 CD's. You can download one from each different show and the CD's are around $5 each and most have 50 hours of shows on one MP3 CD. I listen to the Philip Marlow type stuff but there all there

All depends on the models. For digital cameras, there are xD, SD, memory sticks, Compact Flash cards and possibly others.
