I believe the reason for the time limits was because some posters would come back after posting something provocative or nasty and then return to edit them into something nicer making those that responded initially look bad. Some people would also return at a later date and remove all their content which messes with the flow of a thread especially when they started threads. I may be wrong and will sit corrected if that is the case. @jeff is the one to confirm or correct me on the reasons. I might have it mixed up with another forum.

Jeff said he will be making tweaks sometime in the near future to the site, maybe suggest to have a suggestion list and include this to a longer time limit.

Maybe, if possible, allow editing until there is a reply to the post. That would prevent changes to the context of the replies. & sometimes forum software sets what can and cannot be done.
I'd like a longer window to edit as well. I like to make sure my posts use correct spelling and the like, and occasionally I find that I've accidentally sliced out a chunk by unknowingly selecting a bit of text then typing. The window is pretty darn short right now.
Regarding the editing-to-make-others-look-bad bit? If you quote what you reply to, that can never happen, so I'm not sure its really a valid reason to keep the edit window super short? I also don't know if I've seen people on these forums that malicious...

We had an incident a long while back where someone went in and deleted a virtual tonne of posts...it was chaos. The 'take my football and go home' mentality led to a swiss cheese effect, and the space-time continuum was definitely altered!
Not allowing editing after a certain amount of time promotes accountability, as well. It's not hard to post a follow-up with clarifications...and for anything that needs removing (like having a brain freeze and posting your address), it can be accomplished quickly just by reporting it to us.

It's 2 hours forum-wide, except for the for sale forum where it's 3 weeks. That seems adequate to me to allow fixing "whoops" errors.
How long do you think it should be?

Jeff, for me, It is usually 2 or 3 hours before I get back to review and notice errors. I have a mental block that prevents me from seeing errors until after the deadline anyway!
I personally would like to see 4 to 6 hours and would not object to 12 hours, but not more,
I am interested in what others would say.

I proof read before posting and then before going to another website read the post again for a second read. I'm good with the 2 hours.

No limit. No reason not to leave it ongoing. Also the ability to delete a post.
This is a quality forum with quality members. Let everyone manage themselves. Any inappropriate posts/comments can deleted or get moderated by administration.

WriteON would you say the same if I got my shorts in a knot and decided I was leaving and on the way out I deleted every one of the 4900 plus posts, threads and pictures I ever made? How about if five of the long time members did the same? It shreds a forum and leaves a useless mess that can't be cleaned up. You only have to look at the number of people that get mad when a forum upgrades or changes ownership to see how many quality members can turn. If there is something important to edit beyond a spelling error a "Report" to the mods will get it fixed in no time.

I find myself having to edit a lot - but I made it a habit to proof read one final time after I hit the submit button. I think a little extra time might be prudent and I really don't have a recommendation, however, I don't think unlimited is a good idea for the very reasons that Andrew and Peter have brought up.
So far I have found it adequate to use the "Report" link and ask a moderator to fix something in one of my posts or to delete an accidental duplicate post. They have always been very understanding and accommodating.

Curly. I do not care either way. Just casting my vote. Not a big deal to me. Sometimes I reread what I posted and like to correct misspelled or omitted words. And after your reply I'm sorry I posted and would like to edit/delete it

"REPORT": I was unaware of the "Report" to change wording later on.
As some old timer will remember, I was living in Japan for the first 5 years I was on this forum. And I worked mostly in Japanese language contexts, both in writing and speaking. To this day, I still have "Japanese" as the second language on my computer. If I accidentally hit the cap lock, the input changes to Japanese if in English mode, or English if in Japanese mode. And sometimes a combination of a couple of key suddenly deletes a word or two or even sentence. It is annoying!

I submit the "post/reply" thinking I have corrected everything - to realize a few hours later that I have posted several mistakes that I thought had been corrected. Sometimes when hitting the "post reply" button, if I accidentally hit another key with my fat fingers, whole sentences get deleted or changed or reverted to the original mistake.

The gap thing is a problem for sure. This site is constantly changing over in membership so this can leave big gaps in what new members read and wonder why. It is bad enough when many photos are lost because of photo storage places such as Photo Bucket. Many times I try go back to some of the Bash events and lost are the entries and winners and things like this.
Now I know over the years I have gotten into some skirmishes here and people either ignore me or push me or whatever. Those times I wished I could have deleted things said or rephrased them but it got too late so the stood. I am sure there are many examples spread out through the years. I have been here a long time. But many of those times I just apologized and moved on somewhere within that thread hopefully. I guess my point is there is always the possibility to correct or redact things in some manner weather going through moderators or just within the thread rewrite something and where it says reason for editing give reason or just move on. Time wise what is a good time. Maybe 24 hours is a golden number. Just throwing it out there.

For the few times that I do post either here, FB or other sites, I draft my post in a word document or in Notes (Mac). I draft/edit/correct/spellcheck/etc. over whatever amount of time (minutes/hours/days) I need. Then, when I like the finished written product, I copy and paste it to the site in question. Before final posting I copy/paste applicable photos. Then it's just a matter of hitting the "post" button as I'm fully satisfied with the post because of the previous work. I reply to posts from others the same way. An initial post without pics takes me a few minutes to post. With pics it normally takes me 10-15 minutes. Replies to post by others - like this one - also takes me a short time using the copy/paste process (this one - draft time was 15 min including "wife sanity check" time - and then one minute to post). Hope this helps.

I think it's fine as is, 2 hours should be plenty time if you double check your post before and right after posting.

Can you give me an example of where it would be helpful to go back and edit a post from, say, 6 months ago? I don't see any value to that off the top of my head. I suppose if someone found some really bad error in something they posted they might want to correct it. Reporting the post and asking for the correction would handle that. I've done that for people a few times.
We had unlimited edit time for about the first 5 years of our existence. There were multiple occasions where some well-known members got annoyed at one thing or another and deleted thousands of their photos and posts. That really destroys the flow of a thread, especially when the deletion is in the opening post.
I'm not opposed to raising the limit, but "forever" is not an option. I could go with 12 or 24 hours.
I didn't mean to open a can of worms. I just think two hours is too short. I think 12 hours is perfect. I don't post here from a computer and I think typos are more common when posting from a phone. As I've stated. It would just be nice to be able to fix typos. To be honest, I'm never going to bother an administrator to fix a stupid typo.
Worms are always welcome here! If nobody questions the status quo, nothing ever changes.

Jeff... I'm backing off.... not a big deal. But for an example... maybe I misspelled or omitted words on post of mine from a year ago and I just caught it. I find it embarrassing and want to correct it. I try to take pride in how I express myself... that's all nothing else.

I believe we all make mistakes typing. I know myself my fingers are too big for a keyboard let alone a phone. Spell check picks up alot of them and I use it but at times I leave out a couple words and the whole sentence does not make mistakes. I do not think anyone is going to make fun of this. At least not like the old days when ribbing was king. Whatever you decide Jeff works for me.
I agree with this. I don't think I've ever seen a truly rogue thread or poster here. Maybe there were some in the past? I think sometimes people snipe at each other, but that is kind of human nature at times. I don't think I've ever seen that get out of hand here. But wow, this forum is so...tranquil...compared to some forums, some places on the internet. Some places are truly vile! It just seems like a shame to handcuff people with just a 2 hour post editing limit.
There are times when I don't notice an error in my posts for a while, and then I can't fix them later. Which might be 6 hours or more, maybe even the next day. I think we are all reasonable people here, professional people, and I think we could be given the benefit of the doubt unless something radically changes and truly warrants a very restrictive editing policy?

If I am writing a long post, I type it into a word file then reread it before copying and pasting to the forum. I still make mistakes, but not as often. Also, it's best not to post after a couple pours of good bourbon.

OK. Since nobody really needs my opinion, I'll give it. It's fine as is. Maybe compromise on 12 hours. You can always wait 12 hours or 24 hours or whatever to make sure you don't post pissed. I have often done this both personally and professionally for years. Plus, mistakes are not that big of a deal, we are all human. Besides, if it weren't for mistakes how would we be able to replace the bears? (You may need to search for that, but it is recent and by me)
