Has anyone made these? I bought 10 kits awhile ago and decided to make a few for an upcoming show. I made one, and all went well until you try and sharpen the lead. There's a plastic tube that sleeves the lead, it's press fit on both ends, the nib end comes already pressed on. When you try and remove the opposite end to sharpen the lead, as that is where the sharpener is, the nib end pulls out and even if you press it back in, the pencil is inoperable. I put in new parts from another kit and it did the exact same thing. I'm thinking this kit is very poorly engineered and I will probably keep the lead and throw the other 8 kits right in the trash.

Ken I was thinking of buying some of these but will now refrain given the apparent poor quality/design. Thanks for your input.
Revisiting this, this morning, I have a working pencil. Unlike every other mechanical carpenters pencil I have seen, to access the sharpener. You need to unscrew the very end and not just pull it out. The nib end will unscrew but if you do, the plastic sleeve will pull out and render the pencil unusable. There are so many ways a user could inadvertently damage this pencil that I don't think I could offer them for sale. That's unfortunate because they do make an attractive pencil.

I bought some of these kits some months ago, and I thought the final product was kind of wonky - exactly what you described. I have 5 or 6 of these kits that will likely never be built.
