Easy brass polishing?

I have a brass ferrule with a screwdriver kit that I'd like to polish up a bit. What can I do without buying something expensive like a new buffer?

You can get a 4" buffing wheel to fit on your drill. I think about $4.00 with a mandrel. Compounds will be necessary. Flitz works well but, I use The brown bar and, white diamond.

If its not covered in lacquer etc. you can start with micro mesh down to 12000 grit just like you do your blanks. Then see if you need to polish further. I do that or down to about 1500 grit for special plugs I make for molds that need to be extracted easily.

Yep, or if you have a way to mount it on the mandrel, a paper towel and a dab of brasso spinning against the ferrule.

In a pinch you can sometimes use Tabasco sauce... :biggrin:

Dan, you could chuck up a block of wood (short) turn it down to a jam type of fit and fit your part on the jam chuck and turn it on and use Brasso to polish, no buffer needed.
Give it a try you will like it.

By hand? Use your lathe. I do this all the time with bullets. Same process. Just make a jam chuck to fit it on your lathe. and Brasso or semi chrome polish will work wonders.

Make sure to wear eye protection and skin protection for your hands. Nitrile gloves will work just fine. Not Latex.

On brass and bronze hand planes that I got from Lie Nielson I got some polishing cloths they call Sunshine Polishing Clothes. The are $5 for two, they do an amazing job very fast just hand polishing.

And after the brasso a spray coat of clear lacquer will keep it shiny or even CA

I use my old micromesh to polish metal. Nothing new to buy.
