Just thought I'd share this mornings adventure....

I absolutely love to smell exhaust fumes as the sun breaks through the treetops....well, at least if they are coming from my Stihl 064 dual port and slicing through some small Eastern Red Cedar logs!!

Might as well share a few photo's of some before the blanks are made with ya! All these slabs are 2" thick, which gives me the room to make bottlestopper as well as mutliple pen blanks without a LOT of waste....always something to think about if you ever decide to rip some of your own slabs:wink:

And a close-up of a piece that will be made into bottlestoppers.

Thanks for looking, and more photo's will follow soon of what everything that came from them............

Scott, you have some beautiful wood there. I can not agree more about the odor of ERC, especially mixed with the sound of the saw. What kind of mill do you use to do the ripping! I have been looking at some small chain saw mills for a bit but have doubts about the advertising claims.

PS; It is wonderful to smell the cedar when the skew rides on the blank. The whole shop fills.

I am a big fan of ERC. I just recently acquired 4 good size logs of it and have been cutting it into pen blank size. The only wood that smells better is Camphor.

Wow! Beautiful wood. I'm really looking forward to seeing those bottle stoppers and all. I love ERC.

I use the Alaskan Small Log Mill #777 and the #555....simply attachs to the bar and the 'upper' can be adjusted to any increment you'd like to make your slabs.

Here's the link to the attachment I use: >>>>> MILL <<<<<

As far as drying cedar....
I'd get it cut and stacked for drying, it'll relieve the 'stress' in the timber and reduce the amount of cracking. Plus it'll dry faster!
