Or you may want to consider just painting with artists acrylic paint. Acrylic paints can be diluted and applied a bit at a time until the desired depth of color is achieved. And they can be mixed to get the color you want. Then finish over the painted wood. Acrylics tend to soak in. Of course, with a water based dye or paint you will raise grain that will require more sanding and will remove some, or all, of the color. If you are going to do many of these, I believe you should experiment with alcohol based dyes.
