Dyeing wood

I have some wood that I think would benefit from being dyed a different color. I'm assuming that using a pickle jar vacuum set-up would be the best way to get the dye to penetrate. Anybody bone this? What would be the best kind of dye to use? I've even thought about RIT since it's cheap and readily available.

Gerry I have heard that Rit fades of time but have not personal experience.

Personally I turn the pen first and then wipe on alcohol based dye with a paper towel then again after final sanding.

I 'dye' frequently (and come back to life[]) and use ANALYNE dyes with my vacuum pump/pickle jar set-up. I dilute the dye with acetome mix and alloow to sit for 36 hours. Some species (alder, maple) are better than others at absorbing colour.

I have used the analyne dyes. Mostly done maple burl. Turned to about 1/16" over sized then dipped in the dye and let dry.

Gerry, I use my vacuum setup and Dylon fabric dye. I'm not sure how color fast it is, but it was cheap enough for the experimentation.
