dust separator

I see Rockler has a new item called the "Dust Right Vortex Dust Separator".
$69.99 for the kit, sounds like it might be an inexpensive way to get some of the dust collected. Someday when I get a real shop, I will get a real dust collector, but for now, thinking this might be helpful.

Hi Mark,

Before you run off to Rockler or anywhere else, go here and build your own. It takes about an hour and a half, once you've studied it a little bit, and it works like a dream with a shop vac. Also, if you do it right, then down the road when you get a full size dust collector you can change the intakes out and use it with the new dc. That's what I did, and I've been extremely pleased. Oh yeah, I think that my total cost for the can, MDF, bolts, and fittings was around $35-40 or so.

Mark, there is a new article in the library about DC. It is a mod on the Harbor Freight DC but there is also a separator included in the article. The link is:

Of course I am prejudiced since it is mine. Look it over and if it helps, great. Where you can improve on it, let us know so the tutorial can be improved as well.

I agree,I made one of the collectors about a year ago and love it.I tested it by sucking up about 10 years worth of sawdust behing my radial arm saw,I dumped the 25 gal tub I'm using about 5 times and had about 2 hands full of sawdust to make it into my vacuum.Some fine sanding dust will get by,but very little coarse stuff.It's a great design. John
