I know that this is a bad thing but I have become complacent about dust collection.

The only time I can really find to make pens and bowls is at night after the kids are in bed. The lathe is so quiet. I finally found something I can do in my shop at night that no one can hear.

Since my shop is in the basement I don't turn on the dust collector because of the noise. I have been going through dust masks like they are out of style and I am tired of wearing them.

What I really need is quiet dust collection. I have a Jet 1.5 HP dust collector and it sits in the corner because it is so loud. I can't put it outside because I have a residential city lot and the neighbors would remove me from thier Christmas card list.

What I am thinking about doing is making an insulated closet for my DC. I think this might reduce the noise and allow me to just run pipe from the closet to the areas I need it. Since it is in the basement I thought of just a free-standing "box" build from 2x4s and drywall with insulation in between.

I guess my questions are this:

1. Have any of you tried to create a quiet DC system?
2. If you built a close did you use plans and how did it work?
3. Are there things I am not cosidering? Other DC options?

This will be a project so I wanted to see what others though and to see if people think this will actually work. Thanks for any help or suggestions!!

The Fein vacs I have seen in use have been extremely quiet. The specs are 60dB, which is about the level of normal conversation. Not cheap, but possibly a solution.

You could use either a Triton or Trend hood as they are quiet and keep the dust out of your lungs. To get the fine dust you could use a box fan enclosed by a box with a filter on one end.
