Hi all,

I got the full line catalog from Oneida in the mail today. My needs at this time are pretty modest. However one thing has stirred some interest and I wonder if anyone is using the "Dust Deputy" as shown here with a central vac system?

Take a look at the center picture. http://www.dustdeputy.com/

It looks like Oneida is going after the market Clear Vue has been targeting with their Mini CV06 Cyclone.

From the specifications the Dust Deputy is about 2/3 the size of the CV06.

You can watch the video of the CV06 on the ordering page. It is about 2/3s of the way down.

Charles,

That was my first thought too when I saw the Dust Deputy. (Which is on a special right now for Father Day at $159.00 including s/h) We are installing a central vac soon and I find the picture of the Dust Deputy installed right along side of the central vac unit intriging (sp?) The DD has a ten gallon capacity or you can buy a DIY kit right now for $99 with s/h (again a Father's Day special).

I ordered the $159.00 job and I will likely start out with it hooked up to my shop vac. But what I am hoping for is a set up that will allow me to do some of the things that cause quite a mess in the shop which for me is a room in my basement. And have the central vac running out in the garage collecting the sawdust. [:D][}:)][:D]

I am wondering if anyone else is using thier central vac system to clean up? [?]

Not to take away from either of these, but I recently employeed a poor (or cheap) man's version. The motor on my old shop vac went out a few months ago so I removed the motor and tossed it. I then made and attached a sealed plate over the hole. I added a fixture to the plate for hose attachment. The old shop vac now stands between either my DC (small 1HP unit), or my new shop vac, depending on what I'm doing. I wasn't sure how well it would work, but it does an amazing job of keeping about 98% of the material in the old bucket, keeping my DC bag (or shop vac bucket and filter) nearly empty.[;)]

I only post this to aid any how have a failed shop vac and still wish to gain some use from it.

I similarly have a DC head from Woodcraft that fits on the 5gal painters bucket in line to the dust collector. I chose the smaller size cause I was using it with Silicon Carbide(heavy stuff). It does the same thing but you still end up with leaks around the head, and you could really do with a taller (not necessarily that much bigger) bucket. While it keeps the big stuff out of the DC impellor, alot of stuff still ends up in the bag.

While I am a frugal buyer, I still think my next upgrade for dust will be the CV06.

Mark,

Just curious, cause a central vac is mighty newfangled to me, how much are the HEPA filters for those things? Both the Dust Deputy and the CV06 recommend to have final filtration. .3 micron filters for Shopvac brand vacs are available at Walmart. .3 micron bags for most DCs are available from Grizzley and on summer sale for, I think, $35ish. Where are you having the central vac collector installed at? In the garage, closet, basement? Just a thought as to where the ultra-fine particulate will be exhausted to...

Don't have the dust deputy, but I have the ClearVue miniCyclone. The video they have of it is no lie. It does a superb job separating on the way to the ShopVac. I don't use it on my lathe anymore (not enough airflow from a shopvac), but I do use it on my tablesaw and router table. I've emptied the 5 gallon bucket under it about 5 times so far with barely anything making it through to the ShopVac.

Charles, You asked: "Where are you having the central vac collector installed at? In the garage, closet, basement? Just a thought as to where the ultra-fine particulate will be exhausted to..."

The central vac unit will hang on the wall in the garage. I have a hose port just outside of my woodshop in the basement. I am hoping the cyclone can be "powered" by the suction at that port. I hope there is enough CFM to do the trick. I like the idea of the noisy part of the system being out in the garage.

If one were to add the Cyclone Lid attachment in the vacuum line, then there is little particulate material to worry about. There will be some, but nothing like what can be had from a system with a clogged vacuum filter.

Go to http://www.woodcraft.com/family.aspx?familyid=4310 Cyclone Lid link at Woodcraft and read about the attachment. The device from Woodcraft fits a METAL 30 gallon trash can (avail. Home Depot for about $32). The plastic cans DO NOT WORK as they can collapse from the vacuum pressure and also, the top doesn't seal as efficently since it doesn't fit the plastic rim.

I recently added a system available from Loc-Line - http://www.modularhose.com/ - onto my drill press table AND under the lathe ways where the pick-up can be turned to be directly under my turning tool(s). The retaining clip is mounted to the tool bar and the entire setup travels with the tool rest when I move it. Now I have reduced my generation of fine dust and shavings to almost zero. The clean-up is immediate and I am operating a very clean shop with little to almost zero dust. There will always be some, but it is nothing like it has been being.

I simply run the Loc-Line to the cyclone and then on out to the vacuum cleaner. The shop vacuum filter stays amazingly clean and is now less prone to damage from being "hit" by a chunk of debris, and the filter stays 99% cleaner. I empty the cyclone trash 10 times more than the vacuum cleaner.

If you go to Loc-Line site, pick the 2.5 system as I believe it is far easier to install and use than the smaller items offered. They also offer a fitting that accepts the vacuum line directly from their system and that makes set-up so much easier. If anyone gets confused looking at the Loc-Line setup on their site just e-mail me and I'll be glad to help you out. It can be confusing if you have never looked at these things in person.

I highly recommed the addition of both these items to anyone's vacuum system. Ask around and see if anyone you know is using either, or both, of these additions and by all means go look at the difference they offer us wood turners.

BTW, I'm in Tucker, GA out near Stone Mountain if anyone wants to see my set-up. One day when I get the use of my arm and hand back I'll take pictures. A picture essay would be so much easier for me than all this typing. [:D]
