How you choose a Dust Collector?
We'll use it on the lathe and with a few small power tools.
What system recommended, traditional bag or the Cyclone.
What is the right budget to spend?

I made too many questions?

I don't believe in skimping when it comes to dust collection. Your health will benefit from adequate collection of dust.

The cyclone systems do a fantastic job and the addition of one of those 'pre-sort' separators that keeps the big stuff out of the DC and lets the actual dust go to the collector are a great addition to any system.

I have this one between my dust collector and the lathe and I have not emptied my JET dust collector this year... http://www.ptreeusa.com/dustacces.htm#402

I have the model 402 on a 30 gallon metal trash can and can't be more pleased. It is way easier to empty the trash can than it is to empty the plastic bag over on the dust collector. Using one of these also protects the vanes ion the impeller of the dust collector from being damaged by impacts from large chunks of wood. That alone will more than pay for the cost of one of these additions.

Be sure to look over the rest of the 'stuff' that they sell at the site. They are quite a nice source of other 'goodies' as well.

How much $$$$ do you wish to spend? My only recommendation is, if you get a bag collector get a ONE micron bag.. then the better more powerful collectors start costing lots of money...if you only use SMALL powertools a 1- 1 1/2 hsp should be quite adequate

I think that health is the most important thing.
So I want buy an efficent DC to preserve my health but not oversized.

I have already bought an JET AFS-500 Airfilter; do you think I need a one micron DC too, or I can buy a cheap DC and add the Cyclone Dust Separator Lid with a proper trash?

For Fred: Could you please post some photos of your DC system? I'm not sure I have correctly undestood how it works.

Thanks

I can't post pictures of my system as my digital Nikon is still over in the mid-east with a soldier friend of mine.

The system is simple to set up ... First is a method of collection at the lathe. I use a hose that is attached to the banjo and moves as I move the tool rest. The hose is adjustable and the snout is placed right at the end of my tool where everything is generated - dust, chips,, etc. The hose feeds directly into the top of the cyclone lid on the intake side. The debris is sucked into the cyclone and the larger chips fall out into the metal can. I use metal as the vacuum will collapse a plastic trash can. The finer dust is thus separated and travels out the exhaust port and on to the Jet DC intake port and then into the dust collection bag.

BTW, I often empty the metal can five times more often than the DC can. The cyclone also protects the DC impellers - this can be a rather expensive repair bill if ever a larger piece of trash is sucked into the vanes. Those things are moving rather fast ya know!

Thanks for your advice. I have just received my new JET DC-905A and now I have to decide if buy or build a Separator Lid. However I'm looking for European shops to reduce shipping costs and days.

See you soon....
