Dust collector

There is really nothing wrong with harbor freight system--haven't looked a price in a while though.

I am going to respectfully disagree with this statement. At least for an unmodified unit in an enclosed shop if you don't wear a respirator all the time.

Un-modified the 2 HP Harbor Freight Dust Collector is okay at best. I know, I started with one to build my system. Today, the only part I am using is the blower and motor. I am not even using the impeller (upgraded to larger Rikon) and I have replaced the bearings in the motor.

The HF unit has a 5 micron bag "filter" which only gets the big pieces, the stuff under 5 microns is what is really dangerous, especially if you think are safe. If you are always wearing a respirator with a N95 or N100 filter, and you can air out your shop, then it might be safe.

The Jet unit that Mike links to looks like a great deal for someone. I can't tell how good the canister filter really is. You would need its MERV rating to be sure.

I put this Wynn Environmental MERV 15 on my system. The filter alone is almost what they are asking for the Jet.

Ideally you want something that effectively traps particles smaller than 1 micron.
